This video uses official dashcam crash footage synchronized with the vehicle’s official telemetry logs obtained from Tesla and visualized in CamCutApp. The telemetry shows FSD waiting about 0.67 seconds after the lead vehicle’s brake lights illuminate before it begins braking. From the moment the lead vehicle starts braking until Automatic Emergency Braking intervenes is about 1.5 seconds. During that time, the Tesla slows by only 4 mph, from 62 mph to 58 mph. By the time AEB takes over, only 132 feet remain before impact. There simply isn’t enough distance left to avoid the collision. Millions of AI3 vehicles are still running FSD v12.x. Situations like this require the driver to intervene before it becomes obvious that FSD isn’t braking quickly and aggressively enough, and that’s not always easy to judge in real time. Tesla today announced AI3 v14 Lite which includes “significantly improved safety.” When I get a chance to evaluate v14 Lite, this is exactly what I’ll be testing first. I’ve documented this behavior before on FSD 12, 13, and now 14. The issue appears to stem from outdated map data. This section of the circle used to function as a two-way roadway. At the time, there was no bike lane and vehicles traveled in the space FSD still prefers today. Since the redesign, that area is now a dedicated bike lane, but FSD doesn’t reliably recognize the change. Depending on the version, it will occasionally handle this correctly, but most of the time it does not. This is currently the only issue I consistently experience with FSD. It’s not safety critical. The car will move if a cyclist, vehicle, or object is present, but reliance on outdated map data in locations like this needs to improve.

With FSD V14.3 and after, the car consistently moves into the right lanes 2.5 miles before your highway exit. As you can see below, the moment the car is under 2.5 miles from the exit, it turns on the blinker. I have been able to consistently repeat this. With previous versions of FSD, it would often wait until the last minute. No more anxiety from last second exit merging lol. (video sped up)

Look, obviously, the idea of being able to do something else, like work, while driving is extremely appealing, but you just can't do it like that. Tesla FSD v14 is extremely impressive, but the best data we have right now points to a critical intervention every ~2,000 miles on average. Human drivers crash about every ~400,000 miles on average. You will hurt yourself, or God forbid, someone else, if you keep doing this, as you won't be able to intervene properly. I know some don't believe because they blindly believe Tesla's claim that "FSD is 10x safer than human drivers", but that's the most misleading claim ever. First off, the data is cherry-picked. I do believe that driving on FSD is safer than driving without, but closer to a factor 3x based on the best, not-Tesla-massaged, data. But more importantly, that's 3x safer than FSD plus human. Not just FSD. It is safer because it is supervised by a human paying attention and correcting the system when needed. If you use it like this guy, you are not safer. Period.

FSD V14.1.7 | Near Accident This is without a doubt the closest I have come to getting into an accident in a long time. I think had I not taken over and slammed on the brakes we would not have slowed down in time. You can see that FSD does an incredible job reacting to the car (even before I noticed it) and was slowing down, but it was not slowing down enough to stop in time. As soon as I saw the car swerving to the right I worried she was going to bounce back into my lane so that is when I decided to go full on the brakes to stop the car. You can see prior to me taking over we were full regen braking (which is FSD reacting well) but it wasn't using any real brakes at all, and ABS was not active until I took over. Let me know what you all think in the comments. I still think FSD is incredible - the reality is if you watch the video the car saw and reacted to the situation before I did, it just didn't brake as agressively as it needed to in this situation. FSD + an attentive driver is without a doubt in my mind still safer than a normal human driver who is not using FSD.
