Anecdote: At the foot of my street is a topiary just up from the intersection. First time FSD took me home last Fall, it dealt with the topiary with no issue but seemed perplexed by the reflective post just past it: it slowed, crept forward, was obviously inspecting this unexpected object. Anyone who's seen a horse dealing with something unexpected knows the scene. Next day and ever since, no issues-- it accepts that post now. It learned.

This is the latest version of HUAWEI ADS 4, which is often called China’s strongest autonomous driving system. Compared with Tesla FSD V14.2.2.5 in the same scenario, the difference in reaction speed is obvious. Under the same conditions, the HUAWEI ADS vehicle hit the pedestrian twice, while FSD accurately avoided every collision. This is the so-called Chinese autonomous driving system that many Western influencers claim is far better than FSD. All I can say is that their marketing is extremely powerful. Both local consumers and Western media figures have been misled by its performance in specially tuned scenarios. And this is also why many local automakers are doing everything they can to block FSD from entering China. Once the latest version of FSD arrives, the dream they have carefully created for local consumers will collapse.

At a product launch event last year, Li Bin, ceo of NIO, said “those who think of LiDARs being useless are either dumb or evil. LiDARs can make up for the weakness in vision-only perception”, followed by a short clip showing that LiDAR is able to recognize the obstacle (a stack of tires) in pitch dark and come to a full stop. That was his comment made before FSD rolled out in China. Pretty sure he has watched plenty of FSD videos and wonder what he has to say now.

This Chinese vlogger is both Tesla and XPeng owner. He is an avid tester of Tesla FSD and Xpeng NGP. He points out NGP almost always comes to an abrupt halt when humans or mopeds get real close or cross intersections as evidenced in this clip, even though there is ample time to gradually slow down, making driving extremely uncomfortable. This is not an isolated case. It exists with other XPeng owners. On the other hand, the owner says FSD is very reassuring and predictable. Other systems may have a fewer takeover rates than FSD for now but he still prefers FSD because of its driving comfort, smoothness and confidence.

I tested Xpeng's VLA 2.0 in the streets of Beijing, and it is comparable to my experience of daily driving Tesla FSD v14. Xpeng is not charging $100 a month to drive this. Today, CNBC released a new video with Consumer Reports comparing driver-assist systems. But there's a problem… in the video, they used Tesla's Autopilot, not Tesla's FSD (Supervised), and compared that to the top offerings in other automakers' cars. CNBC also claimed that Tesla lacked an effective driver monitoring camera, but Tesla does have one—so much so that some Tesla owners complain about its sensitivity. Camera based driver attention monitoring is less strict for Autopilot than it is for FSD (Supervised). Not once in the video did they test the latest version of Tesla's FSD. Consumer Reports says Ford and GM have the best driver assist systems. The Mercedes system they praise in the video is extremely limited and can only work on highways. Tesla's FSD (Supervised) will work on virtually any road in the US/Canada.

In Tesla’s latest safety data, FSD logged about 1 major collision every 5.3 million miles, which Tesla says is about 7x fewer major collisions than the U.S. average. On top of this, Tesla FSD delivers 7x fewer minor collisions and 5x fewer off-highway collisions than the average. It’s significantly safer than anything out there. This AI system is learning from millions of Teslas out in the real world, not from geofenced areas, like literally anywhere a Tesla can drive. Tesla’s vehicles use 360 degree camera visibility, over-the-air updates, and has a neural net that keeps making the system smarter, safer, and better over time, for all Teslas. The FSD experience is so good now that manually driving already feels like the distant past. And once you’ve lived with what so many Tesla owners get to experience every day, going back to any other car feels almost impossible.

Here are his impressions: “Flew 25,000 km — half the globe — just to personally experience Tesla’s smart driving and compare it with Huawei’s smart driving. I’ll skip the detailed process and go straight to the conclusion: Under normal weather and road conditions, Tesla’s vision-based routing is first-class. (I didn’t get a chance to test in foggy conditions.) In certain scenarios, Tesla outperforms Huawei. For example, when activating smart driving, Tesla can reverse to avoid a vehicle parked on the left, then go around it and rejoin the road ahead — quite impressive. Route selection capability is also top-tier. It doesn’t just follow conventional routes but can take shortcuts through residential roads. Chinese cars are superior. Typically, the all-wheel drive system on EVs are 10 to 100 times more responsive than ICE cars. EVs being digitized are inherently intelligent, hence the only platform for future. Currently, the only minor hinderance for much wider adoption in some cases, is the recharge time. But as solid-state battery matures, that problem will be eliminated as well. Even with current battery tech, a Chinese plugin hybrid, for which BYD is the world leader, is still superior to an ICE car.

Sadly lawyer Kyla Lee also appeared on this news piece, and while technically correct in her statement about level of autonomy and what legal and illegal in BC, she misses the point point that Tesla Autopilot and FSD are Level 2 by SAE definition and fully legal in BC. This is a case of misuse of a system, not use of a system that is illegal. It is also entirely possible that she did get into this while being interviewed and it was edited out so CTV News Vancouver could keep a certain narrative that FSD = bad, but in reply to our other post she appears to believe that FSD is Level 3.

This may be the longest reverse I have seen Tesla FSD do for me. I was dropping a passenger off at a "local motel", all the way in the back where there is a big fence separating the motel from an industrial junkyard and no easy way to get back out. Tesla FSD v14.2.2 did an amazingly long reverse, all the way through the front gate and then turn around to get on our way to the next passenger. Every day there seems to be something new from Tesla FSD that I see while doing Uber in Houston that just amazes me.
