Well programmed title. Stupidly difficult, and having random cartoony sprites to battle only made things seem like the developers didn't care. Well thought out and decent title though, just insanely challenging.

I remember feeling let down as a fan of the show; I wanted a fast, exhilarating chopper combat sim, with the jet booster from the show... instead we got a frustratingly tricky maze game.

Any fans of this masterpiece? One of the few games I managed to finish (in 2 player mode with my brother) without using unlimited lives: Silkworm It's a classic horizontally scrolling shoot 'em up developed and published by Tecmo for arcades in 1988. You control either a heli (player 1) or a jeep (player 2) as they blast through enemy territory. And "blast" in the very sense of the word - great sound effects, epic explosions, and non-stop action. The helicopter offers free movement in the air, while the jeep drives on the ground, can jump over obstacles like mines, and has a turret that rotates to shoot in a 180 degree angle. Originally an arcade game, it was later ported to home computers like the Amiga (as in the video) and consoles. To me still one of the best games ever for the Amiga, and still playing it these days when my brother comes for a visit.

Desert Strike by Electronic Arts (1992) is a great isometric shoot 'em up, with a killer intro (90s games had the best intros, seriously), and it always felt a a bit of the (very) big brother of Raid on Bungeling Bay from 1984. For those of you old enough to remember, you might see where I am going with this. Across 27 missions, you destroy enemies and rescue hostages, while having to manage fuel, ammo, and armor. You pilot an AH-64 Apache helicopter in a Gulf War scenario, against dictator General Kilbaba and his evil nuclear threat. The game certainly didn't win any prizes for complexity but it had a very high "hell yeah, let's just blow stuff up" factor - which made it great fun and easy to get into.

Unlike hand-to-hand combat games, it features a weapon-based fighting concept similar to Samurai Spirits. For some reason, though, it lacked the level of polish seen in Sega’s other titles and failed to gain widespread popularity. However, the Saturn version of the game was well made compared to other ports and was received quite positively.

Karateka, released in 1984 for the Apple II by Jordan Mechner (while he was a Yale student!), stood out as a groundbreaking title for its era. My biggest achievement as a student was getting out of bed in time for the majority (not all) classes... The innovations included pioneering rotoscoped animation, where Mechner filmed himself performing karate moves on video, traced the frames by hand, and digitized them frame-by-frame for ultra-fluid, lifelike character movements. It was also one of the first games to use cinematic storytelling scenes, inspired by Akira Kurosawa films, and silent movies: wordless cutscenes with cross-cutting (such as showing the princess in peril or the villain's reactions), dramatic pauses and tracking shots. Mechner also had a sense of humor: The Apple II disk included an Easter egg: the game was single-sided but when you flipped the disk it would pay the game the full game upside-down and mirrored, causing players to call tech support in confusion.

Hot take, but I’ve always felt Vice City is easily the worst GTA. I’ve never fully understood the hype around it. Don’t get me wrong the atmosphere is amazing, the 80s vibe is iconic, and the soundtrack is one of the best in the series. Tommy and Ken are great characters too. But once past that, the game itself doesn’t hold up as well for me. The map feels small and empty, especially compared to San Andreas, and even GTA 3 felt bigger in some ways. Driving around and exploring isn’t that fun, which is a huge part of what makes GTA games enjoyable. The missions are where it really loses me. Many feel repetitive or straight-up frustrating, especially early on. The RC helicopter mission inside the building is a perfect example more annoying than fun. It often feels like the game is just throwing obstacles at you instead of offering natural progression. To me, it’s always felt more like a quick follow-up to GTA 3 than a fully evolved entry, leaning heavily on style over substance. It has its moments, but compared to the other GTA games, it just doesn’t hit the same.

Today is the release day of the Star Fox remake. Unfortunately, it’s coming out a few days later in Korea, but it still brings back a lot of memories of when the original Star Fox 64 was released on the Nintendo 64. Super Mario 64 and Mario Kart 64 were incredible games, but Star Fox 64 was also a huge hit when it launched. Unlike its predecessor’s simple linear progression, it introduced all-range mode, allowing players to freely fly around a 3D space during certain missions and boss battles. This made the gameplay much more dynamic and varied. It also added a new 4-player versus mode, which was a lot of fun with friends. The graphics were impressive for the time, and the full voice acting helped make the game far more immersive. Most importantly, Star Fox 64 was the first Nintendo game to support the Rumble Pak. What is now considered a standard feature in game controllers essentially started here. The shock of feeling controller vibration for the first time was far beyond anything I had imagined. I pre-ordered my copy a long time ago and have been eagerly waiting for it to arrive. Hopefully it gets here soon! Has anyone else ordered this game? 😆

Before this #vibejam, I was just casually creating game prototypes for fun, but this time, the Vibejam deadline became a good forcing function that pushed me to actually finish one. While this game is more of a demo than a complete product, it gave me a taste of how challenging it is to fully complete a game. It requires brutal task prioritization, effective time management, and tons of quality assurance (QA). As many say, the last 10% is the hardest, and I’d argue it’s doubly so for games. I now have even more respect for game developers at all levels who manage to ship their games. And there you have it, my game, Gnome Mercy: Insect Invasion. It’s a Vampire Survivors-style game where you play as a gnome on a rampage, annihilating alien insects invading his garden. At the start of each run, the lord of the garden bestows a blessing if you can answer his riddle, powered by an LLM (with fallback riddles in case it fails). The objective is to fight through waves of enemies and survive as long as possible. A huge shoutout to Retro Diffusion by Astropulse for all the AI-generated sprites, artworks, icons, and more. The music was created by Not Jam, the retro chiptunes are amazing. This game is a special homage to Luca 🧄, creator of Vampire Survivors, for inventing the best game genre in recent years! And no, I don’t code at all. The code is 100% generated by @windsurf and built on PhaserJS. Game link below👇

The story is pretty simple: Terrorists have seized the French embassy in Paris and taken hostages. You command a GIGN counter-terrorist team in a rescue operation. Gameplay unfolds in various stages, including the positioning of snipers across the street while dodging searchlights and first-person room-to-room combat to take out terrorists and escort hostages to safety I feel it was really ambitious for its era, by mixing side-view stealth, timing, and careful shooting with pretty dope 3D interior views - for 1988 this was unique.
