If SNK had the Neo Geo AES, Capcom had the CPS Changer. Both were designed to let people enjoy arcade games at home, but unlike the AES, the CPS Changer wasn’t really built as a traditional home console from the ground up. In many ways, it felt more like an official supergun made by Capcom themselves. It even supported the Super Famicom CPS Fighter stick. A lot of people had the chance to experience MVS hardware thanks to the AES, but the CPS Changer was much rarer, so not many people ever got to see one in person. When you first connect it to a TV, the controller gives off a bit of a Super Famicom vibe, but once the game starts, the polished graphics and incredible sound immediately make it clear that you’re basically playing real arcade hardware at home.

Happy birthday, Bubble Bobble! It was released exactly 40 years ago today, on June 16, 1986. The arcade version was absolutely brilliant, being one of the first games to have a coop-multiplayer option. It was also one of the the most ported arcade games in history, with over 20 ports to home computers and consoles, including even the legendary TI-84 Plus (primarily a calculator). The port that got the highest praise and came closest to the original arcade experience was the C64 version. Excellent graphics, one of the most recognizable tunes , and great gameplay make Bubble Bobble a timeless classic. My brother and I played the crap out of this one back in the day, and we still load it up on my old C64 when he comes for a visit. It's like riding a bike, you never forget how to play Bubble Bobble.

Because of that, it wasn’t the massive leap that Model 3 had been, but it still ended up getting a huge variety of games from not only Sega, but many other companies as well. Popular titles like Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and Capcom vs. SNK 2 were also NAOMI-based games. What was disappointing, though, was the irony that Virtua Fighter 4 never came to the Dreamcast and was instead released on the PlayStation 2.

Most people know the PC Engine port, but it was also released on the much less capable MSX hardware. Back then, when the hardware gap was too large, developers often had to heavily rearrange the game to make it work. However, the MSX version really stands out for its effort to stay as faithful to the arcade original as possible.

Its hardware was so powerful that, aside from the Neo Geo, it was virtually the only system capable of delivering near-perfect arcade conversions at the time. Unfortunately, it was extremely expensive and sold exclusively in Japan, so very few people ever had the chance to experience it. Even today, decades after its release, the quality of its games is still incredibly impressive. Ghouls ’n Ghosts is a perfect example. Compared to the Mega Drive and PC Engine versions, the X68000 port is on an entirely different level in terms of accuracy and overall quality. It’s still amazing to think that a game this good could fit on just two floppy disks.

HANGZO is an unreleased arcade prototype, reminiscent of The Ninja Warriors or Hagane. Developed around 1992, its exact origins are a mystery because there is no proper credits, though it runs on Data East arcade hardware, making it the most likely candidate. It was recovered and preserved thanks to the emulation community.

There were three Capcom games that always made me think, “Why was this never released on consoles?” Those games were The Punisher, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, and Alien vs. Predator. Thankfully, The Punisher was included in Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics, so it can finally be enjoyed on modern consoles. But the other two are still unavailable due to licensing issues. Hopefully, those problems get resolved someday so they can also be released on modern consoles.

But Capcom did an incredible run in the 90's that included 2 official D&D games. Hack 'n' slash *platformers* would be yet another branch.
