Ever since I bought an arcade cabinet, I’ve become really interested in arcade games. Similar to console games, you can buy arcade game PCBs and run them by connecting them directly. Capcom games are a bit unique in that they use a six-button layout, so they require a separate connector, but aside from that, the setup is surprisingly simple. You can also play these games through emulators, but the feeling of enjoying them on real hardware is something else entirely. Super Street Fighter II was the first game for Capcom’s arcade system, CPS2, and compared to CPS1, both the graphics and sound were significantly improved.

This was the same resolution commonly used by CRT TVs and many 8-bit, 16-bit, and 32-bit home consoles. Then Sega introduced higher-resolution arcade games with Virtua Fighter and Virtua Racing, which used 24kHz (496×384). Sega Model 1, 2, and 3 arcade boards are famous for using this resolution. One of the reasons the Sega Saturn versions of Virtua Fighter 2 and Daytona USA looked so different from the arcade versions was because of this resolution gap. Later 3D arcade games moved to 31kHz (640×480) resolution. Sega NAOMI games are one of the best-known examples. That’s why you need to be careful when buying an arcade cabinet. Early cabinets only supported 15kHz, while the commonly seen Astro City supported both 15kHz and 24kHz. A fantastic experience with possibly the most brutal sense of speed on a videogame, in a loud moving cabinet back then. Also highly playable on emulation with analog control support. So advanced that it only got matching versions on home systems for Sega 32X and Sega Ages compilation on Saturn, many years later.

Judge Dredd (1993) by Midway is one of arcade gaming's great "what ifs?" A digitised-sprite beat 'em up built on the same T-Unit hardware family as Mortal Kombat, it reached location testing but was cancelled before full release. Only prototype ROMs survived, making it a fascinating glimpse into a lost Midway arcade project. Fun fact: the prototype features multiple gameplay styles across its stages, including traditional brawling, platforming sections, and unique objective-based levels. The game even teased future content featuring Judge Death before development was halted.

Golden Axe: The Duel (1994) by Sega took the Golden Axe series into one-on-one fighting, introducing a new generation of warriors battling for the legendary axe. Running on Sega's ST-V arcade hardware, it combined large character sprites, weapon-based combat, and fantasy-themed special moves, making it feel like Sega's answer to the 2D fighter boom of the mid-90s. A damn shame it doesn't play that good, but still worth checking out.
