The government already pays over $1T per year just in interest on the $39T national debt and can't afford to pay more. Choice 2: Hold rates steady Inflation lets the government repay the $39T debt with cheaper dollars each year. But because they keep borrowing $2T every year, the debt keeps growing. The problem is still there. Choice 3: Cut rates and print money The dollar weakens, inflation runs hotter, and the real value of the $39T debt shrinks year after year. The government has no choice to do this and you pay the price. If you hold cash or bonds (and the average American does), you pay the cost. This is what happened in 1946, before inflation erode the value of the dollar by 50% over the next 28 years.
