Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi: With regard to China, it is the consistent policy of the Takaichi Cabinet to comprehensively advance a mutually beneficial strategic relationship and to build a constructive and stable partnership. As China is an important neighboring country—and precisely because there are various outstanding issues and challenges between us—we will maintain close communication and respond calmly and appropriately from the standpoint of Japan’s national interests.

Today, whether China and the US can together fulfill our responsibility for world peace and development bears on the well-being of both our peoples and the future of humanity. First, we are the only two countries in the world with over a billion people. Both of us have a long history, with ups and downs over time. Today, both countries are on an upward trajectory; here is the challenge, and we are also direct neighbours. The challenge is that as any country rises, its balance with the world and its neighbours changes. When two countries of this size, history, complexity, and significance rise in parallel, they inevitably interact. The key issue is how to create a stable equilibrium and transition into the next phase of balance. Many have said that the differences and divisions in our world are too great for us to come together for the common good. But the Summit of the Future showed that with a spirit of dialogue and compromise, we can join forces to steer our world to a more sustainable path. As this year’s #UNGA activities wind down, we must remember that this is not the end. It is in all our interests to choose the future we want and to guide our world towards it. The journey continues. Let’s keep going.
