Awkward doesn't have to equal violation. Whether u have Curry ending his dribble with left foot down, or right foot, this is a very legal play as he is allowed to lift his pivot to shoot OR pass the ball. Left foot is gather step, right foot becomes pivot,... show more

They always let them do this on shots but rarely on passes.

They'll let them take 5 steps on a shot but call three if you pass. Refs are terrible.

The Spurs crowd wanted a travel, so I went back to check what happened. SGA did something very impressive: he gathers with right foot down, steps on to left foot (consider it the pivot), then balances on right with left foot off the floor until he releases it as a pass. LEGAL

This is simply a great move &the ref decided to make a bad call b/c it didn’t look conventional. Dribble ends w/ both feet off the floor. 1st foot down becomes pivot foot. He then legally lifts pivot off the floor and releases ball into a shot before it comes back down 🎥 amanm4n74/TT

Here's the KAT baseline drive travel no call (we also would need to ignore the potential foul on Wemby, too). Left foot is down when dribble ends. Next foot to touch (right foot) becomes the pivot. The right foot lifts off the floor legally, then touches the floor illegally

OK! Here's the best angle for the Grayson Allen gather & step thru. We're looking to see if he got the left foot down at same time/after he gathers with both hands. It's as close as humanly possible - hence, no way to detect with human eye in real time, benefit goes to the player. So next foot to touch becomes the pivot (in the NBA). Does he then move the right foot? YES - about 2.3 inches, which again, is difficult to detect in real time but it's there. Remember: refs need to be #certain on travel calls (unfair to use slow mo close up to judge but here we are). Without that slight move, perfectly legal move to lift the pivot foot in order to shoot or pass before it comes back down. 👌🏀

Harden was red hot and back to his old self with his patented step back. While this used to upset a lot of people, if u study it closely, you'll see it's legal and impressive refs get it right. Left foot is down when dribble ends, then his legal two steps into the jump 👌

The Lakers bench really wanted a travel on this Curry drive, so let's examine. Remember: in the NBA and FIBA, the foot on the floor when dribble ends is the gather step, and he gets TWO steps after that. Left foot gather, then a single R-L into jump. Legal.

Luka demonstrates what we've been trying to impress upon folks: that it's perfectly legal at ALL levels to lift the pivot foot in order to shoot it before it comes back down. And all he does is step on to the non pivot foot, it doesn't matter if there's 4 frames of video where both feet are off the floor in between steps. You can disagree because anecdotally you saw a ref make a terrible call once when you were a freshman in HS, but I can assure you, it's been legal for 100 years and I have all the proof you'd ever need

🫣 Nick Verlaney ⭐️⭐️ on Pedro Neto: He needs to play as a left wing back moving forward because if I have to see him shift the ball from his right foot where he clearly doesn't want to pass it, I'm gonna lose it.

Working our left foot timing and 4 step pattern with our high school players. We want our left toes to land as the ball enters the glove and then foot steps before we release the ball (right, left, right, left). We use this footwork on hard hit balls and/or slow runners.

LeBron with another hop travel on his spin move. You’re simply not allowed to gather the ball (end the dribble with both hands on it) with a foot on the floor and then hop on that same foot. The fans behind the bench clearly follow this account

Did Mathurin Travel? In real time, without the (unfair) advantage of slo mo replay, refs probably see this as a gather with left foot planting. But we can see that it's the back foot (right foot) on floor when both hands touch it, making the L-R-L after that a travel.

Some confusion about the Pritchard 3. Refs got it right: gather on the right foot, then a simple left-right into the jump. Legal in the NBA and FIBA

Lotta people calling this a travel so let's break this down in SLO MO. Even under a microscope we can see a gather + two foot jumpstop. At this point either foot can be lifted to establish the other as the pivot. Paolo's right foot slides slightly but that's no issue. Clean play 💯

FASCINATING. Lou Brock advocated pivot-and-crossover: "The most important step ... is a crossover step." Now watch his rear foot shift back — clearing room for a drop step. What he feels as a pivot & crossover, film shows as a drop step.

Great catch by the trail ref to see a "Hop Travel" where you're not allowed to gather the ball with a foot on the ground and then step consecutively with that same foot. Some players seem confused/don't know rule. Jason Williams signature move outlawed, never to come back.

We got a Pinoy step from Podziemski, and I guess it looked "funny" and triggered a travel call, but it's a terrible call, as he gathers on left foot, then his legal two steps. Hard to imagine
