Today, I had the opportunity to express gratitude to our defense industry workers. These are the people who have dedicated their lives to Ukrainian strength. People who manufacture our weapons, which show results on the battlefield, at sea, and in air strikes on Russia's war machine. I thank them for Ukrainian artillery shells, cannons, drones, missiles, and electronic warfare systems. For everything that helps our warriors fight and saves Ukraine’s life and the lives of Ukrainians. We will have more weapons, shells, drones, and EW systems. Today, I met workers from one of our defense facilities. We do not talk about it officially. During wartime, we cannot openly demonstrate our capabilities. We will, of course, openly express our gratitude after the war. These are the people who have found a way to significantly strengthen our country. With each day, we gain more and more of this strength. The strength we need so much. Such a long-range strength.

The life of ordinary people in Ukraine is mostly survival, not heroism. True heroism is at the front, where bullets whistle, shells explode, and drones buzz, hunting for living people. We cannot control the rockets and drones. We cannot control the politicians. But we are capable of controlling ourselves. That is how we hold on ✊🇺🇦.

The anhinga aka snakebird, water turkey, piano bird or as I like to call them “Amazing Aquatic Dino from Jurassic Park 23.” When it comes to eating, these birds always find themselves in a rather curious and bizarre predicament. With the grace of an underwater ballerina and the enthusiasm of a medieval jouster, the Anhinga uses its long, pointy beak to spear fish while gliding through swampy waters. And since they’ve got no arms, no hands, and not a single finger in sight, removing said fish becomes a full-on physics lesson. They must somehow remove the fresh catch without dropping it. How in the world do they manage this? With a skill that is honed sharper than their own beak. They carefully toss the fish into the air. Spin it so it goes down headfirst and at the final millisecond before release they apply a brilliant little twist, a subtle flick that arcs the fish perfectly back down the hatch. One thing’s for certain. Anhingas don’t need chopsticks. Glad I’m not a fish and so happy to have hands.

The Ukrainian mistake that put an entire strategy into question Until the end of 2024, Ukrainian defenses using drones were very effective, slowing down not only the Russian advance but also inflicting significant casualties. During this period, the Russians heavily invested in drones, from factories to the development of fiber-optic drones, which were still produced in small quantities. By the end of 2024, a second Chinese restriction on the sale of components further complicated these transactions for both sides. Both industries were already manufacturing various components in small quantities, but still heavily dependent on Chinese imports. While the Russians expanded their intermediary networks to bypass restrictions and maintain Chinese imports, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense decided to invest in local companies to produce fiber-optic cables. Essentially, all other components continued to be imported from China via intermediaries, but strangely, several Ukrainian companies started manufacturing low-quality cables and received government funding. The result was an unprecedented superiority of Russian drones on the battlefield, while Ukrainian fiber-optic drones were produced in much smaller numbers, with limited range and low-quality fibers that broke easily. This mistake of nationalizing such a sensitive component was initiated by the Ministry and not due to Chinese restrictions, since all other components continued to be imported through intermediaries. In my view, it was a bold strategy that ultimately failed, compromising the Ukrainian advantage until that moment. You either win the war or make money. It's hard to do both. It will be a major challenge for Ukraine to regain its front-line capacity as it previously was, facing a Russian production of 500,000 fiber-optic drones annually. This significant error weakened Ukrainian defense, which was already operating with low manpower and high desertion rates, but was still adjusting and maintaining the front through the hiring of mercenaries for many months. Given the scarcity of equipment on the front line, there is doubt whether lowering recruitment age will have the desired effect to sustain the front for a long period. It would also be necessary to resolve the issue with fiber-optic drones and for Ukraine to receive another batch of equipment from 2023, which I believe is unlikely. The situation involves multiple aspects of deterioration that have persisted for a long time, continuing to impact the AFU. While financial aid is being maintained, the absence of American support with weaponry is being felt as a crucial issue.

This is probably one of the best known segments of gun camera footage depicting a B-17 interception and has been featured in countless documentaries, but the raw footage is worth examining in detail in its entirety. 0:00 As the Bf 110 pilot fires an initial burst, ineffective due to insufficient deflection, puffs smoke can be seen coming from the bomber's ventral ball and tail turrets as the gunners return fire. This is the position the ball turret would need to be in for the gunner to exit his post and enter the fuselage. It is possible that he was preparing to bail out. At the one minute mark a shell impacts the ball turret directly and blows off a panel. A small fire has also started in the trailing edge of the port wing. 1:08 Now at point blank range, the Bf 110 pilot continues to rake the bomber with cannon shells, walking his fire across the fuselage and port wing. The bombers engines appear to continue functioning and from this angle the shells would be detonating in the aircraft structure well before reaching them. As the Bf 110 closes in the damage to the B-17 becomes more apparent. The rear fuselage and starboard wing are riddled with holes and the starboard horizontal stabilizer is in tatters. The tail gunner's bullet resistant window appears to have been shattered by a direct hit. The port waist gun hangs upwards as it would if no one was holding it, although there does appear to be some movement on the starboard gun. With the attacking fighter having been able to approach to bomber at such close range with impunity, it is clear that the gunners are either dead or incapacitated. It's also worth nothing that the Bf 110's rear gunner would have been equipped with a MG 81 Z twin-barreled 7.92mm machine gun with a rate of fire of over 50 rounds per second, and he would doubtless have taken the opportunity to add to the B-17 crew's misery as his aircraft overtook the bomber. Unfortunately the exact date and location and therefore the identity of the crew involved appears to have been lost to history, but this remains one of the most harrowing gun camera clips ever filmed and a poignant illustration of the horrors young men faced in the skies over Europe during the Second World War.
