Both the Tesla Cybercab’s wireless charging system and the Porsche Cayenne’s $8,000 wireless charging system use Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology for precise alignment. The difference is Tesla was granted an FCC waiver to use UWB on fixed outdoor charging pads so Cybercab can autonomously self-align and charge unattended in robotaxi fleets. A rule was in place that normally restricts UWB to handheld devices only and bans fixed outdoor antennas/infrastructure. Tesla is good to go now, which is huge! Porsches system doesn’t need a waiver since it was designed for private use at home. In Tesla’s video it shows Cybercab charging at 25 kW. Porsche’s at-home system maxes out at 11 kW and has a 90% charging efficiency.

I took a brand new 2026 ONVO L60 Ultra + through a NIO Power battery swap station in Chongqing, China to experience the entire process from start to finish. BTW which was done 100% fully autonomously including the driving to the station. In this full video, I show what it’s actually like to arrive at a NIO battery swap station, position the vehicle, begin the automated process, and leave with a freshly swapped battery; all without the traditional charging stop most EV owners are used to.
