A new study analyzed more than 200 fossil mollusk shells from coastal deposits on South Australia's Yorke Peninsula. The shells date to two past warm periods: the last interglacial (about 127,000 to 115,000 years ago), and the Holocene (which began around 11,700 years ago). Scientists measured oxygen and carbon isotopes preserved in the shells to reconstruct ancient sea temperatures. The results show SSTs were often 4C warmer than today. During the last interglacial, reconstructed temperatures ranged from 17.6C to 22.9C. For comparison, modern coastal waters typically range from about 15C to 19C. Sea levels were higher in the past too As much as 5 meters above present during the last interglacial, and up to 3 meters higher during the mid-Holocene. He was obviously hoping for someone to complain about Trump "And that's not a secret because we have signed an agreement with the US in 2020 with regards to furthering more collaboration between Greenland and the US with regards to investment and private businesses." "No. I think one of the reasons that they're having a little bit trouble selling it in Greenland, the Danes, I mean, is that the independence does not come from the US. It comes from us." "It's us who wants independence." Nichols "And then we've heard Donald Trump say that he wants to take Greenland. Do you have any concerns around that?" Antarctic sea ice extent is currently tracking the long-term average dating back to 1979. In fact, there is more sea ice around Antarctica today than there was 45 years ago in 1981. In the Arctic, the picture is also misrepresented. There has been no net trend in Arctic sea ice extent since Greta Thunberg was three years old. Season ups and downs play out, but there is no sustained decline. Taken together, total global sea ice extent right now is higher than it was in 2006. That was the year Al Gore predicted polar collapse and was awarded the Nobel Prize. This is not conjecture. It is what the satellite record shows.

Just 5,000 years ago, the Arctic looked very different. During the Holocene Thermal Maximum, summers in the northern hemisphere were 3C warmer than today. And life thrived. Birch and spruce forests expanded all the way to the edges of the Arctic Ocean in places like northern Siberia and Alaska. Ancient pollen, macro fossils and soil records confirmed these weren't isolated trees. They formed sustained forests, replacing tundra with thriving ecosystems. Permafrost back then was weak, patchy or absent. Peatlands developed, supporting rich life where frozen ground would later take over. But around 5,000 years ago, colder and wetter conditions returned. This marked the neoglacial period. The trees retreated, permafrost spread. And the Arctic became the frozen, barren expanse we know today. Yet the land still remembers. Buried trunks, preserved seeds and deep peat layers tell the story of a greener, warmer north. Ignored in today's narratives is an inconvenient truth: The climate is always changing, and history shows us warmth is beneficial for life.

And just for perspective, drought causes Yangtze - China’s most important river and the third-longest in the world - to dry up - affecting hydropower, shipping routes, limiting drinking water supplies, and even much worse. We saw the prices of food, fuel and energy soared due to the situation in Ukraine. And this is predicted to make things a lot worse because we depend on China imports than Russia and Ukraine. COVID-19 has reminded us that we live on a small planet, where none of us are isolated from the problems in our global community. So, governments need to remember that the science who told us to worry about COVID-19 and how to deal with it is the same science telling us to worry about climate change with a long list of recommendations on climate actions. Dear friends, this is no longer just a climate crisis. We are now facing something deeper. Mass extinction. Air pollution. Undermining ecosystem functions. Really putting humanity’s future at risk. Which in the future will shift over from supporting humanity to starting to undermine humanity. If we don’t act in the same way about climate change, the effects of a hotter planet will be much worse. This is a humanitarian crisis.
