Friedberg: New study shows enzyme reverses skin age from 70+ years to 31 Chamath: That’s a $2T market. Did Scientists Just Discover How to Reverse Skin Aging!? “CML is kind of the predominant molecule that gets formed in this extracellular matrix that's driving aging, and nothing breaks it down. So these scientists set out to try and create an enzyme, an enzyme is a protein that breaks something down, that can break down CML. And so these guys kind of went out and they took the target, which is CML, and tried to figure out, ‘Okay, how do we actually degrade CML, clear that extracellular matrix, and reverse aging?’ They started to test it on the proteins that we would find in our body, casein, collagen, retinal proteins, which are in your eye, hemoglobin, and they were able to get rid of 52 to 97% of the CML, just degrade it away. And then they found several sites where they were able to degrade over 90%. And then they took actual human skin from elderly patients that had donated their skin, and they put this enzyme onto that skin, and they were able to eliminate 55% of the CML on the skin, basically reverse the skin's age down to the age of a 31-year-old, this is from greater than 70-year-old patients, just by putting this enzyme on the skin. And so it's kind of a groundbreaking demonstration of combination of AlphaFold, what's called directed evolution, where you change the order of the DNA that changes the structure of the protein to test different proteins, do high throughput screening, and ultimately make a novel protein that doesn't exist in nature today that can do something pretty profound for human health.” Chamath: “It will be a trillion-dollar market. If you can create a cream…” Friedberg: “I mean, dude, if you could put this enzyme literally on your skin and have it absorb in…” Chamath: “Game over. That alone is $2 trillion.”

$GOOGL has an anti-aging asset nobody is pricing. Friedberg david friedberg walked through a Calico paper that should be on Alphabet holders' radar. Calico is Google's longevity lab. Working with Revel Pharma, it used AlphaFold plus directed evolution to design a novel enzyme that degrades CML, the glycation end-product that stiffens tissue and drives aging. The result is not a slide. Across five recursive design cycles the enzyme degraded **52-97%** of CML on human proteins, and on donated skin from patients over 70 it eliminated about **55%** of CML - reversing the skin's profile toward that of a 31-year-old. It is AI-designed proteins doing something genuinely new in biology, not a benchmark score. Chamath Chamath Palihapitiya frames the first market as cosmetic: a workable anti-aging cream is a multi-trillion-dollar category. This is the AlphaFold thesis paying out in a product line, and the AlphaFold-to-drugs bridge is exactly what Demis Hassabis Demis Hassabis has argued is the real near-term return on Google's AI - not chatbots, but designed molecules. Same company, same stack, a second revenue engine the market files under "research." Implication: this is deep-optionality inside a name you already hold on search and cloud. It does not move the $GOOGL model this year. But it is a reminder that Alphabet's AI edge shows up in drug and materials design, an option the Street assigns roughly zero value. If a Calico or Isomorphic asset reaches a real market, that is upside no analyst is underwriting. Watch for Calico or Isomorphic Labs to move a designed molecule toward a commercial or clinical path.

She pointed to studies showing that elite athletes possess unique microbial profiles not found in the general population. “Are athletes creating their own microbes that are becoming resilient because they’re training constantly at such a high level of precision?” she asked. This observation raises an exciting possibility: could capturing and transferring these “resilient” microbes to non-athletes enhance their physical capabilities? Dr. Hazan believes this could be a future frontier in microbiome research, with applications that extend far beyond the athletic world. Her insights also touched on the well-known “fat mouse, skinny mouse” experiments, which have demonstrated the microbiome’s role in body composition. In these studies, transferring stool from a skinny mouse to a fat mouse caused the latter to lose weight, while the reverse transfer led to weight gain. Dr. Hazan’s own research corroborated these findings, as her team observed microbiome changes in mice that gained weight after being fed soy. However, she noted a key challenge: these results have not yet been consistently replicated in adult humans, underscoring the complexity of translating microbiome interventions from animal models to clinical practice. Dr. Hazan’s work is a clarion call for continued exploration of the microbiome’s vast potential. From slowing aging and restoring memory to enhancing resilience and managing weight, the implications of her research are profound.
