Conservative MPs are not telling Canadians the truth. The Speaker of the House ruled their unprecedented motion to trample the Charter protected rights of Canadians must be sent to committee for further study, to determine whether Parliament should be able to use its extraordinary powers to circumvent due process for Canadians. So now that they have been caught playing their dangerous political game, they are obstructing their own obstruction. Probably because they know if this goes to committee their egregious behaviour will be called out and they'll have to face the truth of their actions. The Speaker has been clear: send this to committee. Then let's get to debating the important legislation Canadians want us to work on.

Canadians should never fear persecution for sincerely held beliefs. This is why I have fought Bill C-9 from the beginning. While the Liberals claim it provides protection, people of faith across Canada are reaching out by the thousands with deep concern about how this bill will impact their ability to practice their faith freely. The government is elected by the people, and it's time that they listen to the people who will be impacted by this legislation, instead they have taken every action to limit debate. As we approach the stage of the final vote, I will not support Bill C-9, because freedom is foundational to our democracy.

Here is a question for all of you: Do you believe we should be making it easier for our government to prosecute and jail Canadians based not on their actions – but on their words? To criminalize speech and prosecute those for expressing sincerely held religious beliefs? For me, the answer will always be no. Free speech, free expression and freedom of religion are foundational principles upon which our nation, and Western civilization, is built. I will always defend these fundamental Charter rights. I tabled a petition from Canadians concerned about Bill C-9. Hate speech is already illegal under sections 318 and 319 of the Criminal Code. Petitioners are not asking for less protection. They are asking Parliament not to remove long-standing safeguards that protect sincerely held beliefs expressed in good faith. Bill C-9 risks expanding government power while weakening important Charter protections. When Canadians take the time to defend their fundamental freedoms, Parliament has a duty to listen.
