Can’t stop. Won’t stop. The models keep insisting on historic cold as the huge Canadian Polar Vortex pays the Eastern US a visit! A pool of record breaking cold 850mb temps and record breaking 500 mb heights (for early-mid Nov) will do a “fly by” Monday-Wednesday as actual surface... show more

A 180! After a record hot Christmas across the Middle & parts of the South, a New Year’s Arctic Blast promises a Deep South Freeze by New Year’s Eve. Gonna be quite the shock to the system, with 20s into North FL, 30s Central FL, and this one may actually reach far South FL with 40s! These are real temps. Wind chills will be lower. #florida #cold

After an extraordinary holiday heat dome across the US, get ready for a Polar Vortex Invasion next week! Cold air will surge deeeeeep South with 20s in the Southeast and 30s far south into #Florida. What’s most interesting is airmass won’t be super cold up north - just slightly below normal. Instead the South will get the brunt, with the SE & FL 15-20° below normal!

The Arctic flood gates are opening up, as a strong & warm (relatively) block grows over Greenland. That warmth will shove the frigid Polar Vortex south, with multiple cold plunges in the batters box for the next 10-15 days in the Midwest, Great Lakes, Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. The chilly air will visit the Deep South and #Florida periodically too.

⚠️ Highly Disruptive Cross Country Winter Storm late week-weekend! ⚠️ Deep South Ice Storm appears likely. The real question is how far south the ice gets. An extremely cold airmass with a near record Canadian High Pressure will drop south & undercut a strong-moist subtropical jet stream. This combo will bring a long swath of snow and ice accumulation from the Rockies to the Southeast / Mid-Atlantic Coast. Stay tuned for details.

If you like cold and snow in the East, the pattern the next 2 weeks is text book! Watch as a Giant Greenland Block intensifies and retrogrades across the Canadian Tundra through the period, forcing cold air deep south and trapping it in the Eastern US. This pattern may even have potential for Southern ❄️ ! We’ll see. For the layman, (relative) warm blocking in the Arctic “displaces” the tropospheric Polar Vortex, forcing cold southward into the US. For the weather nerds out there, the high latitude block reaches 4.5 Standard Deviations / Sigma from the mean next weekend on the European model. Easily a record. It may not verify, but if it’s even in the ballpark, it’s on like Donkey Kong! Buckle up!!

High pressure remains in charge for the next coupe of days Things become more mobile into the weekend, as low pressure skirts across the north of Scotland, pushing a cold front southwards High pressure returns to the south on Monday, bringing more settled conditions once again

The battle of the seasons continues! The heat dome vs the polar vortex duking it out for dominance. We all know how this ends, but the Polar Vortex still has some gas in the tank! First the #heatdome brings record heat to #Florida this week - feels like 100° - then the Polar Vortex slings another chilly shot south next week with most of the East dipping 10-15° degrees below normal. For Florida, drier, milder air will help lower the temperature a bit, but not for long and not by much. North of I-4 pleasant (but not cool) air will return by Tuesday/ Wednesday.

A soggy start to Tuesday for some of us with the rain falling as snow across higher ground in the north and perhaps to lower levels in the far northeast of Scotland 🌧️🌨️ The brisk easterly winds will make it feel cold, particularly in the north 📉

Get ready for a WILD ride across the US this week! Extreme jet stream means extreme heat in the West, and very early cold in the East! 105+ in the Pacific NW, 30s in the Great Lakes and Upper Midwest, and a real taste of Autumn in the East. No Dice for you Florida, but this extreme jet will at least act as a tropical trouble blocker - like a wall - for at least the next 10 days. Temps will reach 35 degrees plus and minus normal in the west and east respectively.

There is NO END IN SIGHT to this brutally Cold pattern, with multiple waves of Arctic air likely to continue pouring into the U.S. well into mid-December. The Polar Jet Stream will keep diving south again and again, dragging down round after round of frigid Canadian air. This is the kind of cold we normally see in the heart of January - seeing it this early is highly unusual. Temperatures will run 10, 20, even 30 degrees below normal, and some locations may drop below zero for a prolonged stretch. Wind chills will be even worse. Bottom line: ⬇️ The cold isn’t going anywhere. Bundle up… it’s going to be a long, frigid stretch. 🥶

❄️ SNOWFALL REPORT: This Week (12/1) More snow is on the way as a series of storm systems sweeps across the country, bringing brutal cold temperatures behind them. Here’s a breakdown of each Storm ⬇️ 1️⃣Everything kicks off Tuesday morning with our first storm, bringing widespread accumulating snow from the Ohio Valley into the Northeast. The jackpot looks to be the interior Northeast, where 4-8” are possible. Along the coast (NYC, Boston, DC), expect mostly rain. 2️⃣Later in the week, a second storm may take a similar track, bringing another round of accumulating snow to the Northeast. Details are still TBD, but snow is definitely on the table. 🥶Behind both storms, the Polar Vortex will dip into the U.S., delivering a surge of very cold air - highs in the 20s, 30s, and 40s across the eastern U.S. It’s going to be a fun week 😎❄️

What’s driving the upcoming record breaking cold snap?? It’s widespread warmth (up-to 30F above normal) and intense blocking in the Arctic/ Greenland/N Canada. That is squeezing out the (tropospheric) Cold Polar Vortex and forcing it south deep into the US. While it may be tempting to blame Global warming-low Arctic sea ice-& Arctic amplification for this, the climate change component is likely enhancing, but is not the primary driver. Teleconnections to various natural oscillations (and the stratosphere) working in tandem are often the culprit in these high latitude blocks. Climate change simply piggy backs and makes the blocking - and amp’d pattern - more extreme. (But it does NOT make the cold air, colder which is a common misconception)

🔥 A MAJOR Thaw is coming NEXT WEEK for our Eastern brotheren as the weather pattern completely flips. 🌡️Temperatures will FINALLY rise above freezing for many areas that have been dealing with Siberian level Cold and Snow for weeks. 🫠 Mountains of Snow that have been sitting in parking lots and along roads since the last storm will finally begin to melt away. 🥶 Meanwhile, the Western US turns colder, with increased chances for Snow as the pattern shifts west. 👀 This warmth arrives AFTER another Cold Blast this weekend, so one more punch of Cold is still on the way. 🤔 The big question is how long does the warmth last? Some models keep milder air in place into the middle to late part of February, while most suggest the Thaw is short lived with Winter returning to the East. Enjoy the Thaw next week, my brotheren 👊 It may not last.

Trend towards some #snow around #Chicago for later Saturday into Sunday is still on the board Now 4 of 5 models put some snow into the area as the monster winter storm passes well to our south Frosty fly in the ointment is the impact of lake effect snow materializing, or not. That’s the difference of a little to 3”, or the 8-9” advertised by the UK model Short range hi res models still 2 days out til we see that, but wording has dropped into the official long range NWS forecast for this chance of snow for the 2nd half of the weekend All of this of course follows our deepest freeze in 7 years that kicks in about midnight Thursday and will get some -30° and dare I say -40° wind chills by sunrise Friday. Talk about model agreement? 14 models all go at least -20°

2027 will almost certainly be the warmest year on record for Earth - by a long shot - and perhaps even 2026 may reach a record too. That’s due to the big boost of heat released from El Niño, on top of the long term warming. This happens as excess heat stored deep in the west tropical Pacific moves east and towards the ocean surface. When it reaches the surface the extra energy sparks thunderstorms and powers a strong subtropical jetstream. That combination releases tons of heat into the air and powers extreme weather all around the planet. As a result, the planet’s surface temperature will warm up significantly, pushing us past (probably far past) the record set in 2024. Worth noting that the planet’s warmest 10 years on record are indeed the last 10 years. And that the Earth is likely warmer now than it’s been in at least 120,000 years. #elnino #heatwave #extremeweather #science #stem

Winter Weather Advisory ⚠️ for Lake Cook Dupage and Will counties and south from there from 6PM Saturday to 6PM Sunday If it was just system #snow giving us a glancing blow from the expansive southern storm dumping every type of weather from #Chicago to the gulf coast, an easy forecast of 1”-4” north to south would be on the table But dance with the devil we must as Lake Michigan sits poised to be either a reluctant dance partner or the lead tango dancer in the snow show Forecasts range from 2”-9” in the city. 2” means no lake impact, 9” means we get a long duration lake feed I’m leaning toward the latter, as entrenched cold air, mid and low level wind convergence over the lake, a lengthy North-Northeast wind fetch and still open mid lake surface water should be enough to loft even a little moisture 2-3 miles upward to feast on an excellent snowflake growth zone that will feed into the immediate Chicago shore areas and add another 3”-5” to the system snow. Another tricky point is the ratio of liquid to snowfall. Usually we see a 10 to 1 mix. 0.1” liquid=1” snow. This cold air here will double that to 20 to 1 so even an extra 1/4 inch of liquid would be 5” of snow (0.25x20=5.0) to add in And by immediate shore areas I could see Midway getting double what O’Hare gets. Like Cicero Ave and east being a cutoff Here’s the model variance. Snow would start to trickle in about sunset Saturday and just hang out thru much of Sunday into the afternoon.

This is arguably one of the most complex steering scenarios in recent memory!! Two hurricanes(?), a stalled cut-off upper low, and a deep Greenland cold pool diving south. How all these factors interact with each other is driving the models (and meteorologists lol) up the wall!! Will soon to be #Imelda be pulled into the Carolina coast by the cut-off low as many solutions show? Or will #Hurricane #Humberto drag Imelda gradually out to sea, as Humberto gets dragged north by the large Greenland jet stream trough? Only time will tell, but folks from FL’s northeast coast to the Carolina’s especially should stay weather aware. More obviously Imelda will impact the Bahamas this weekend-early next week and Bermuda needs to watch #Humberto. In all this, a #Fujiwhara pivot is possible! WFLA NEWS

🚨 An absolutely LUDICROUS amount of Snow is about to fall out West as a TRAIN of Storms pushes onshore. ❌This comes as our West Coast brotheren have been dealing with RECORD low Snowpack, with many ski resorts forced to close parts of their mountains due to a lack of Snow. That is ALL about to change next week as an Atmospheric River delivers a near constant FEED of moisture into the West. ❄️ The heaviest Snow remains on track to fall in the Sierra Nevada, where 4 to 8 FEET or more could pile up early this week. 🏔️ Heavy Snow will also dump into the Rockies, including Colorado and Utah. Here, 1 Foot or more could fall over several days. 🌲 The Cascades will see PLENTY of Snow as well, with 1 to 2 FEET likely in the higher elevations. 🌧️ Lower elevations along the West Coast, including Seattle, could see a few Snow Flakes mix in, but little to no accumulation is expected. ✅This is FANTASTIC news for our mountain loving brotheren out West who have been DYING for Snow. It will also do wonders for the California and Rocky Mountain Snowpack, which desperately needs the boost. 👊 Enjoy the Snow, my mountain loving brotheren.
