Eastern Europe is set to experience the strongest cold spell of this winter so far, especially in Ukraine and Belarus. 🥶🧐 Temperatures will drop below −25 °C around the turn of the week, which is 10 to 20 °C lower than is typical for the region: However, the mass of Arctic air will not spread much farther into Europe and will stall over Eastern Europe. The temperature evolution over the next five days is shown in the video below.

The video shows the development of temperature anomalies from Wednesday one week ahead. For several weeks now, a significantly colder-than-average air mass has been present over Antarctica. 🧐🥶 In the coming days, temperatures there are expected to remain more than 20 °C / 40 °F below the long-term average (see the video). This mass of Antarctic air is concentrated mainly over the continent, where it has persisted for an extended period. In recent days, some of this cold air has also spread into South America, bringing below-average winter temperatures there as well:

What’s driving the upcoming record breaking cold snap?? It’s widespread warmth (up-to 30F above normal) and intense blocking in the Arctic/ Greenland/N Canada. That is squeezing out the (tropospheric) Cold Polar Vortex and forcing it south deep into the US. While it may be tempting to blame Global warming-low Arctic sea ice-& Arctic amplification for this, the climate change component is likely enhancing, but is not the primary driver. Teleconnections to various natural oscillations (and the stratosphere) working in tandem are often the culprit in these high latitude blocks. Climate change simply piggy backs and makes the blocking - and amp’d pattern - more extreme. (But it does NOT make the cold air, colder which is a common misconception)

GFS still maintaining a winter storm icy scenario. Despite the EURO northern turn GFS hasn’t really changed. NWSAtlanta in their briefing this afternoon said models really struggle with the Arctic systems and overrunning. They stated that even 24 hours out it is difficult to predict precip types and locations. Throw in the Cold Air Damming we get in N Georgia and that makes it even harder to predict. We still have a Winter Storm Watch out for the entire Tristate area I cover and that watch could even be expanded southward NWS is saying. The hurricane hunters are doing sampling missions for NWS and that data will be entered into the models. Any additional support we can get will help. The upper air soundings just aren’t as good over western Canada and some parts of the USA. Therefore model initialization happens at different starting points for each set. Hopefully get some kind of agreement that zeroes in better. I would like to see a warmer solution especially if ice is the main problem. We have lots of cold air coming after the storm and anything that is on the ground or roads will not go away fast. Very COLD air is coming. #gawx

Powering our very unusual pattern - with early season Gulf cold fronts and strong wind shear - is an extremely amplified jet stream for September. It has thrown the whole Northern Hemisphere weather off-kilter. That means cool-dry weather this weekend for North-Central Florida about a month early! It also means hurricane killing wind shear across the Atlantic Basin! Here's the science: Warm air is being forced all the way up to the Arctic circle by an elongated jet stream. That will cause an "Omega block" to form this weekend over Central Canada - you can see the Greek Omega shape with cold air on either side. These "blocking" patterns are very tough to dislodge. Because what goes up, must come down, cool air is being forced south along the Eastern Sea Board bringing Faux Fall to Florida. Faux or not, we will take it! WFLA NEWS

Watch as a Giant Greenland Block intensifies and retrogrades across the Canadian Tundra through the period, forcing cold air deep south and trapping it in the Eastern US. This pattern may even have potential for Southern ❄️ ! We’ll see. For the layman, (relative) warm blocking in the Arctic “displaces” the tropospheric Polar Vortex, forcing cold southward into the US. For the weather nerds out there, the high latitude block reaches 4.5 Standard Deviations / Sigma from the mean next weekend on the European model. Easily a record. It may not verify, but if it’s even in the ballpark, it’s on like Donkey Kong! Buckle up!!

A 180! After a record hot Christmas across the Middle & parts of the South, a New Year’s Arctic Blast promises a Deep South Freeze by New Year’s Eve. Gonna be quite the shock to the system, with 20s into North FL, 30s Central FL, and this one may actually reach far South FL with 40s! These are real temps. Wind chills will be lower. #florida #cold
