Casey Affleck’s performance in Manchester by the Sea hits its 10 Year Anniversary mark this year. It’s literally some of the best acting I’ve ever seen & I think Affleck absolutely earned that Oscar. Casey’s talent still feels a little under appreciated. He’s an incredible actor.

Casey Affleck would’ve won the Oscar for Best Supporting for The Assassination of Jesse James any other year but ‘08- but Affleck ran into Javier Bardem, who’s performance in No Country Old Men was a locomotive. All that said, Bardem’s excellence doesn’t infringe on Affleck’s.

Cate Blanchett deserved the Oscar for Tár. I said it then & I’m saying it again now. This performance from Blanchett is some of the best acting I’ve ever seen. Blanchett literally brought Lydia Tár to life. With every passing year, The Academy’s snub of Blanchett only gets worse.

Denzel Washington just narrowly missed a third Oscar for his performance in Fences when he lost the award to Casey Affleck for Manchester by the Sea. Both Affleck & Washington were impossibly good- just unlucky for Denzel they ran into each other. He’s so good in this film.

Revolutionary Road didn’t meet its full potential because it’s a little long & a little slow. But that doesn’t mean this movie is without moments. Leonardo DiCaprio & Kate Winslet are exceptional & produce some of the best acting I’ve ever seen. I hope they work together again.

Apollo 13 earned Ed Harris an #Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor & he absolutely deserved it. In a cast loaded with great actors, Harris steals the spotlight. I think this guy’s a brilliant actor who looks, sounds & feels like a real human. We need more actors like this.

Matt Damon produced Manchester by the Sea & originally planned to star in the film. A scheduling conflict with The Martian forced Damon out of the role & Affleck in- which lead to Casey’s Best Actor win at the Oscars. This has slowly turned into one of the better “what ifs” in recent Hollywood memory. Had Damon taken on this part, I like to think he could’ve contended for Best Actor as well.

The Imitation Game feels like it came out a lifetime ago. This earned Benedict Cumberbatch an Oscar nomination for Best Actor & while I’m not as high on Cumberbatch like some people on this app, I think he’s without flaw in this film. I’m also partial to historical dramas- they interest me in particular. Good film - great performance.

20 years ago, Brokeback Mountain lost the Oscar for Best Picture to Crash. It’s a decision that I still think the The Academy wishes it could take back. Everyone always talks about Heath Ledger’s brilliance in The Dark Knight, but he’s impossibly great in this film, which also earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. Director Ang Lee is a creative genius.

Sean Penn appears to be losing momentum in the Best Supporting Actor race, but I still think he may have given the best performance of 2025. Penn loses himself in Lockjaw. It’s an all-time villain performance in my book. But at the same time, I get the field is loaded this year.

It’s hard to believe that Barbenheimer is nearing its 3 year anniversary this summer. It’s a weekend I’ll never forget- the buzz & excitement around Cinema was at a historic high, especially here in Los Angeles. It was one of the best weeks I’ve ever had running this account.

It’s been nearly a year since Demi Moore took the world by storm with The Substance. Moore gave us a vintage Hollywood comeback. And I don’t think losing the Oscar for Best Actress changes anything. Even without the win, this performance will still resonate for year to come.
