Denzel Washington just narrowly missed a third Oscar for his performance in Fences when he lost the award to Casey Affleck for Manchester by the Sea. Both Affleck & Washington were impossibly good- just unlucky for Denzel they ran into each other. He’s so good in this film.

Casey Affleck’s performance in Manchester by the Sea hits its 10 Year Anniversary mark this year. It’s literally some of the best acting I’ve ever seen & I think Affleck absolutely earned that Oscar. Casey’s talent still feels a little under appreciated. He’s an incredible actor.

Denzel Washington’s performance in Flight would’ve probably won him an #Oscar in any other year but 2013, where he ran into Daniel Day-Lewis who won for Lincoln. It’s hard to say whether Denzel deserved this over DDL but this is truly one of Washington’s best performances ever.

Ben Affleck gave a really strong performance in the George Clooney-directed film The Tender Bar. Affleck’s performance is heartfelt & mature. I thought this had an opening for a potential Oscar nomination, but it’s still some of Ben’s best work as an actor. An overall good film.

I’m still stunned Paul Dano didn’t receive an Oscar nomination for There Will Be Blood. I understand the Best Supporting Actor field was loaded that year (Bardem, Affleck, PSH, etc.) but there needed to be room for Dano. He literally goes toe-to-toe with peak Daniel Day-Lewis.

Ben Affleck won the Oscar for Best Picture for Argo but yet…didn’t receive a nomination for Best Director. This didn’t make sense back in 2013, it doesn’t make sense now. I’m not a die-hard fan of Argo, but if you give the film Best Picture, at least nominate Ben for director.

The moment Affleck’s face first appeared on screen in Oppenheimer, you could feel it in the theater- there was a buzz. Even upon rewatch, Affleck’s entrance still packs such a massive punch.

Christoph Waltz was flawless in Django, but his performance in Django is cut from a similar cloth as Inglourious Basterds- and not as good. PSH in The Master is a once-in-a-lifetime performance. He should’ve won the Oscar for that exact reason.
