The kind of place where the very best engineers in the world are fighting to get in. If top technologists aren’t lining up to join you, you’re not building a truly great company. If you want to build something massive, tech culture isn’t “important” — it’s number one. You need an environment where elite engineers want to work with other elite engineers. That’s incredibly hard to build, but without it, you’re capped before you even begin. At Palantir and my other companies, we paid lower cash and higher equity on purpose. We wanted people who believed in the mission and the upside. We’d give three choices — more cash, medium, or less cash with more equity. The best people always chose more upside.
