Today, I was in Pipeline Estate clearing garbage that had been irresponsibly dumped along the roads by tenants. It’s unfortunate that many landlords in Pipeline do not pay for garbage collection services. As a result, their tenants, lacking proper waste disposal options, are forced to dispose of their household waste directly onto the roads posing serious health and environmental risks. Moving forward, I will lead a strict enforcement exercise to ensure that all landlords, caretakers, and tenants involved in this illegal dumping are held accountable. As stipulated in the Nairobi City County Solid Waste Management Act of 2015, every premise owner is responsible for cleanliness within a 10-metre radius of their property. This law will be fully enforced without exception. Let’s keep Nairobi clean and dignified for all.

The Lagos State Government has inaugurated a Special Task Force to combat indiscriminate waste dumping across the metropolis, particularly on roads, bus stops, garages, and lay-bys. As part of the initiative, members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) will work with government agencies as “waste police” to monitor and report environmental violations. Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi , emphasized that tackling environmental abuse requires collaboration between government and transport unions, warning that offenders will face sanctions. He also directed union leaders to ensure cleanliness in their garages and parks, discourage indiscriminate trading, and remove illegal structures that contribute to waste generation. Deputy Chief of Staff, Mr. Sam Egube, highlighted the critical role of transport workers in maintaining public order and security, urging them to report suspicious activities and support efforts to keep Lagos clean and safe. LAWMA Managing Director, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, PhD , noted that Lagos generates about 13,000 tonnes of waste daily and called on transport unions to help prevent waste disposal on roads, promote proper waste management, and stop street trading around bus stops and newly constructed roads. Stakeholder Sola Giwa assured the unions of government support in enforcing sanitation standards, removing illegal shanties, and maintaining clean transport facilities. Now it has a home-grown alternative that is proving just as strong, and in some cases stronger. Indian scientists have developed bio-bitumen, known as Krishi Bind, made from agricultural waste like rice straw. When blended with conventional bitumen, it has matched and, in laboratory tests, even exceeded the strength and durability of regular road binders. Bio-bitumen is produced through pyrolysis, a clean process that converts crop residue into bio-oil without burning or smoke. This material is then blended into road surfaces that are already being laid on pilot stretches of national highways. India is the first country to produce bio-bitumen commercially for roads. Early field performance shows good resistance to heat, moisture and wear, while long-term monitoring continues. The result is simple: roads that last, fewer oil imports, cleaner air and farm waste turned into value. This is not symbolism. It is durable infrastructure built from what was once burned.
