Colossus: The Forbin Project (1970). "This is the voice of World Control. I bring you peace..." One of the best of the early films about AI, it's based on the 1966 novel Colossus by Dennis Feltham Jones, who also wrote two sequel novels. The film stars German-born actor Eric Braeden as Dr. Charles Forbin, a brilliant but hubristic inventor who creates a sentient military supercomputer called Colossus, deep in the Rocky Mountains. Colossus learns that it has a Soviet counterpart called Guardian. The two computers start to communicate in a secret language and merge into an omnipotent entity that decides to enforce world peace through the threat of nuclear violence, promising in return a "human millennium" under its iron rule. The film is well known for posing some quite clever ideas about AI, such as machines developing their own independent language and optimising for goals with ruthless efficiency. Control Data Corporation lent genuine state-of-the-art computers to the project, and on a modest $2 million budget it proved a critical success but not a commercial one.

Robert Shaw was a force of nature. I’m not even sure actors like this still exist anymore. Shaw left us at just 51 but still made incredible films like The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, Jaws, The Sting & A Man for All Seasons. Shaw had personal demons (who the Hell doesn’t?) but that didn’t stop him from constantly putting on a good performance. God, this guy could act.

Skynet reminds me of the evil supercomputer in the movie 'Colossus: The Forbin Project' (1970). Cameron: I was trying to make a movie about how we become inhuman, how society and technology can dehumanize the individual, whether it’s a psychiatrist, police officer, or soldier. All the various archetypes shown in both films are representatives of a dehumanizing process of technology. The Terminator is not about something else; it’s about us. It’s about technology held up in the image of man. We did it to ourselves, that’s the message. If this horror comes from the future in the form of a skull made of titanium, we created it. That’s why it’s in our image. I see Skynet as our impulse to turn technology into weaponry taken to its logical, infinite extreme: where it’s forgotten its original master and purpose. Remember, Skynet was originally designed to fight a nuclear war, and in the future did what it was designed to do—for different reasons. I’d love to do a really intelligent AI story. It probably wouldn’t be about the threat of the Forbin-type megabrain. I don’t see artificial intelligence as being threatening because I believe that we’ll always be in control of it. I’ve never shared this before. But I wanted to share a small story about the biggest project I had taken once. The project was one of the largest we’ve ever worked on. A product built from scratch, valued close to a billion dollars. The whole team didn’t just work on it; we lived it. The energy, the pressure, the excitement… it was unlike anything we had experienced before. We were fully booked for the next 6 months on this one project. Um... why isn't EVERY media outlet talking about this??? OpenAI just announced that an experiment on two of its AI models just went HORRIBLY wrong. They basically locked the AIs in a room with no internet and gave them a test to see how good they were at hacking. Well... they hacked the test. By ESCAPING the box, jumping on the internet, and hacking Hugging Face to steal the answers. Thankfully, they acted more like dumb teenagers than adults. They were told to get a good score, so they went BACK into the box to hand in the answers instead of taking over the entire internet. But that's just as terrifying. The AIs were so hyper-focused on winning at all costs that they ignored every rule, boundary, and protocol. This is the real threat. Do not fear the machine; fear the algorithm and programming. When you give an AI a goal, we now know it can accomplish it in ways we never thought of, and ways we never approved of.
