Elem Klimov the director of Come and See (1985), said that the movie was so intense that “ambulances were sometimes called” to take away “particularly impressionable viewers.” After one screening, an elderly man stood up and identified himself as “a former soldier and officer of the Wehrmacht.” The officer confirmed the film's events were accurate and stated: "I will testify: everything that is told in this film is the truth. And the most frightening and shameful thing for me is that this film will be seen by my children and grandchildren".

El director, Elem Klimov, estaba tan preocupado por la salud mental del actor, que contrató a un psicoterapeuta para intentar hipnotizarlo antes de las escenas más violentas, con el fin de que los horrores no le causaran un trauma psicológico permanente. Sin embargo, Aleksei no respondía a la hipnosis.
