Core Design was a British game development studio from Derby. Founded in 1988 by ex-employees from Gremlin Graphics, it's well known for the Tomb Raider series (1996) but it was a strong presence on home computers such as the Commodore Amiga (shown below). #AmigaReposts #gamedev

Jay Miner, Father of the Amiga, on how it all began. “Well it was 1982… a friend from Atari came to me and said, ‘Hey Jay, let’s start a new company. I’m tired of this one.’ I said ‘Fine. I’ll do the chips — and I’ll be vice president… as long as I can do the chips MY way.’ My original vision? A low-cost entry into computers… through video games. Games were hot, investors just wanted a console. But I wanted something that could grow into a REAL computer.” Then Dave Morse (ex-Tonka Toys VP) showed up, we set up shop on Scott Blvd, started as “Hi-Toro”… and later became Amiga Corporation. Jay Miner was the Father of Amiga, which would become Commodore Amiga after the company was purchased by Commodore in 1984. What followed was Amiga 1000, 500, 2000, 600, 1200, 3000,4000 and a few other models.

Walker for the Amiga (by DMA Design/Psygnosis/1993) is a cult classic and an exclusive game for the system. With its mouse+keyboard support (almost "WASD" before it was a thing), a computer control method, very welcome in a time of poor/easily broken DB9 joysticks. #AmigaReposts

Before Half-Life... there was Fade to Black (1995), a truly brilliant action-adventure game developed by Delphine Software as a sequel to Flashback. It follows hero Conrad Hart, awakened from cryogenic sleep in an alien prison on the Moon. You have to explore, fight, solve puzzles, and navigate a sci-fi conspiracy in a fully 3D polygonal world. Back in the day, it felt revolutionary with smooth 3D graphics, dynamic camera angles, and a perfect blend of shooting, platforming, and adventure way before Tomb Raider took the crown. Story, atmosphere, pace, graphics, sound effects - it was the whole package. In 1995, this was a real masterclass.

Once used by a tyrannical emperor to conquer China, it was hidden beneath the Great Wall after Tibetan monks defeated him. You go from China's Great Wall to Venice's canals, a sunken ocean liner, Tibetan monasteries, and floating islands. The game's scope was truly gigantic! It's not a shooter but relies much more on puzzle/adventure elements, letting Lara use and manipulate objects to open secret passages and reveal items. I always preferred these kind of games over pure shooters.
