As much as I enjoyed these special effects on my 32” conventional-screen TV in the ‘90s, it sure would be nice to have BluRays with updated scenes that could be switched on and off à la the new Blake’s 7 sets. But, I’d still rather watch 480p B5 than DS9 (which I like fine)

While I am in favour I cannot watch these. I had hoped there might be some quality enhancements but no, sound especially is below par. Also interrupted by ads. My advice? Watch The Gathering to see if the show holds any interest then purchase season one. Enjoy!

@UAVHive Brings back good memories! I remember rendering a still of a spacecraft in Sculpt 3D on a stock Amiga 500, took a whole night to execute!

If only a billionaire would make it possible to remaster those wonderfully directed sequences that had very awful graphics.

Did you know the iconic seaQuest DSV intro was powered by Commodore Amiga? Back in 1993, when CGI was still in its infancy and insanely expensive, Amblin Imaging (Steven Spielberg’s effects house) chose a revolutionary low-cost solution: a render farm of Commodore Amiga 2000 computers running NewTek LightWave 3D and the Video Toaster. All those stunning external shots of the massive seaQuest submarine gliding through the ocean depths? Rendered on Amigas. The show only used about 1.5 minutes of CGI per episode, but it looked groundbreaking for television at the time. They networked dozens of Amigas together to handle the complex underwater visuals — a setup that helped make high-quality 3D effects accessible beyond big Hollywood budgets. This was the same Amiga + LightWave combo that famously powered early seasons of Babylon 5 and other 90s sci-fi hits. The Video Toaster even won an Emmy for Technical Achievement in 1993! The future of TV VFX was built on a machine many still call the greatest home computer ever made. Commodore Amiga — changing the game from your desktop. 🖥️✨ONLY AMIGA MAKES IT POSSIBLE!

Did you know the futuristic underwater effects in the 1993–96 sci-fi series SeaQuest DSV were mostly created on… Commodore Amiga 2000? Yes, really! While Hollywood movies were spending hundreds of thousands on Silicon Graphics workstations, the seaQuest VFX team (Amblin Imaging) used a fleet of souped-up Amiga 2000s with Video Toaster, LightWAVE 3D, and 68040 accelerator cards. These machines cost a fraction of an SGI Crimson or Indigo² (which easily ran $50k–$100k+ each in the early ’90s). The Amiga rendered all the CGI submarines, sea creatures, holographic displays, and that amazing opening title sequence you still remember. Proof that in the right hands, affordable tools can create television magic. Only Amiga Makes It Possible!

Dick Van Dyke isn't just a legendary actor and dancer. He was also a devoted Commodore Amiga user. He bought his first Amiga in 1991, got hooked on LightWave 3D and the Video Toaster, and started making his own 3D animations and effects at home. He even used that setup to create a CGI motorcycle stunt for an episode of Diagnosis: Murder — a shot the production couldn’t safely film — and received an on-screen credit (and $200) for the work. He later spoke at NewTek / LightWave and Amiga events and showed his animations at SIGGRAPH.This is one of the pieces he made on his Amiga. What a legend!

This Commodore Amiga game might have got the worst review score ever! It earned one of the lowest review scores in Amiga magazine history — a brutal 3% from Amiga Power in 1994, with the reviewer calling it something Psygnosis and developer The Dome "should be utterly ashamed of themselves" for releasing. This is pretty brutal, but were they right? What did you think of Last Action Hero?

Jay Miner, Father of the Amiga, on how it all began. “Well it was 1982… a friend from Atari came to me and said, ‘Hey Jay, let’s start a new company. I’m tired of this one.’ I said ‘Fine. I’ll do the chips — and I’ll be vice president… as long as I can do the chips MY way.’ My original vision? A low-cost entry into computers… through video games. Games were hot, investors just wanted a console. But I wanted something that could grow into a REAL computer.” Then Dave Morse (ex-Tonka Toys VP) showed up, we set up shop on Scott Blvd, started as “Hi-Toro”… and later became Amiga Corporation. Jay Miner was the Father of Amiga, which would become Commodore Amiga after the company was purchased by Commodore in 1984. What followed was Amiga 1000, 500, 2000, 600, 1200, 3000,4000 and a few other models.

5 Facts you didn't want to know about Alien Breed for the Commodore Amiga Alien Breed (1991) is a landmark Amiga title that defined Team17’s early style: tense, atmospheric, and brutally addictive. It was perfect for co-op gaming with mates. Programmed by Andreas Tadic and Peter Tuleby, with graphics by Rico Holmes and iconic music by Allister Brimble. 1. Top-down run-and-gun sci-fi shooter heavily inspired by Aliens: You (and a friend in co-op) explore an infested space station, blasting xenomorph-like aliens (I originally thought they were aliens) while managing limited ammo and health. It mixes fast arcade action with tense resource management. 2. Team17’s breakthrough hit: This was only their second game, after Full Contact, and their first full-price release. It put the UK developer and publisher on the map, before they became famous for the Worms series. 3. Extremely well-received on Amiga: Launched to critical acclaim, with many magazines scoring it 85–91% (CVG 91%, Zero 91%, CU Amiga 90%, Amiga Action 87%). It was usually praised for its smooth multi-directional scrolling, atmosphere, co-op play, and technical excellence on the Amiga. 4. Infamously difficult: The original game was notoriously tough and short, with only six levels. Because of this, Team17 later released Alien Breed Special Edition 92, with rebalanced difficulty, extra levels, and various fixes. In my opinion, it’s a much more enjoyable game. 5. No official Commodore 64 version: it was developed primarily for the Amiga, and the Commodore 64 never got a conversion :( Would you have played it? I would have big time! Still one of the best top-down shooters ever made on the Amiga. Who else remembers the panic when the ammo ran low and the aliens kept coming?

Alien Breed '92 Special Edition on the Commodore Amiga — pure 16-bit sci-fi mayhem! Team17 took their Gauntlet-meets-Aliens top-down shooter, doubled the levels to 12, cranked up the tension, and dropped it at budget price in 1992. (I was going to say...“So you cooked up a story and dropped the six of us in a meat grinder" but wrong franchise, LOL! The result? A frantic corridor crawler that stayed in the UK charts for over a year! Narrow space station halls crawling with xenomorph-style horrors, key hunting, door bashing, power-ups, and that unmistakable Amiga atmosphere. In space, no one can hear you scream... (back onto the right franchise) but on your Amiga 500, you heard every blaster shot and alien screech in glorious 32 colours! This was one of the definitive Amiga action games. Did you play the original or go straight for the Special Edition?

Did you play this New Zealand Amiga game? Skidmarks on the Commodore Amiga (1993)Skidmarks is a top-down isometric racing game developed by Acid Software and released in 1993 for the Amiga (OCS/ECS models like A500 and A1200). Key features: - Fast-paced racing with realistic drifting and skid physics — cars leave visible skidmark trails on the tracks. - Variety of vehicles, each with different handling (e.g., fast sports cars, sturdy 4x4s). - Multiple tracks featuring hazards like oil slicks, ramps, and jumps. - Supports up to 4 players: split-screen for 2 players, or full-screen Micro Machines-style view for 4 players using parallel port joystick adapters. - Two Amigas can be linked via null-modem cable for head-to-head races (up to 4 players total). - No in-race music, but strong sound effects including engine noises. The game was programmed in Blitz Basic by a small team in New Zealand called Acid Software. Acid was founded by a tight-knit team including programmer Mark Sibly, who used Blitz Basic to craft the games. Skid Marks was praised for its smooth performance and multiplayer fun on standard Amiga hardware. Amiga Format magazine rated it 90% "I would sum up Skidmarks by saying it's fast, furious and fun", and CU Amiga magazine called it "...one of the most instantly playable game I have ever played" Did you link up 2 Amigas to play Skid Marks with mates?

“You can’t do a first-person shooter on the Amiga.” Alien Breed 3D (1995, Team17 / Ocean) was the first-person pivot of Team17’s top-down Alien Breed series, built for AGA Amigas (A1200, A4000, CD32) after Commodore had already collapsed. The story is, Team17 asked id Software about licensing Doom for the Amiga. It never happened. Martyn Brown later recalled John Carmack saying a proper first-person shooter could not be done on the machine; another account says the licence fee was set so high the game would have been uneconomic. Either way, Team17 hired Andy Clitheroe, a University of York maths student who already had a software 3D engine, and shipped it as Alien Breed 3D in October 1995. What did you think of Alien Breed 3D on the Amiga?

Babylon, a small port town situated on the Euphrates River, grew to become one of the most prosperous cities within Mesopotamia. Today, Babylon is located within modern-day Iraq, roughly 50 miles south of Baghdad. The city originally dates to around 2,000 BC, and over several millennia it has encompassed a blend of artistic, architectural, and cultural achievements under different empires. Babylon has also been the seat of famous and powerful rulers, such as Hammurabi, who is known for having enacted the Code of Hammurabi, and Nebuchadnezzar II, who is credited with building the mythical Hanging Gardens of Babylon. Babylon’s position within the cradle of civilization has also connected it to the larger cultural legacy of the area, including the development of cuneiform and written language. For thousands of years, Babylon has repeatedly popped up in myths and Abrahamic stories as a significant site for history and religion, and its global fame has resulted in it becoming the source of inspiration for countless literary and artistic works. The exploration of Babylon, which the ancient Greeks acknowledged as "the city of cities". Babylon earned its reputation not merely for its size, but for its staggering beauty and architectural marvels, the most famous being the Hanging Gardens, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. These lush, terraced gardens, built by King Nebuchadnezzar II for his homesick wife, showcased an array of exotic plants and trees, teeming with life in a desert landscape. Babylon was also home to the iconic Ishtar Gate, a structure so grand that its blue-glazed bricks and intricate animal reliefs astounded all who passed through. Constructed in 575 BC during Nebuchadnezzar II's reign, this awe-inspiring monument exemplified the grandeur of Babylonian architecture and heralded the city's power and prestige. The city's allure was not just about grand architecture. Babylon was a beacon of knowledge, housing the vast Library of Ashurbanipal, filled with thousands of cuneiform tablets from all corners of the ancient Assyrian Empire. It stood as a testament to the intellectual curiosity and innovative spirit of the Babylonians, who excelled in areas like mathematics and astronomy. The city's scholars even developed one of the first known code of laws, the Code of Hammurabi, that greatly influenced subsequent legal codes. Babylon's influence extended to its economy as well. It was a bustling trade center where merchants from all around flocked to barter their goods. The city was especially known for its textile industry, producing woolen clothing and carpets, dyed in bright colors from plant-based dyes, which were much sought after in the ancient world. However, it was not all splendor and glory. Babylon's history was marked by periods of decay and desolation. Its downfall began with the Persian invasion in 539 BC, and further devastation followed under the reign of Alexander the Great, who sought to rebuild it but died before his plans came to fruition. The once magnificent city gradually crumbled into ruins, sinking beneath the desert sands. Yet, Babylon's legacy lives on, shaping our modern world in ways often overlooked. This mesmerizing city gave us some of the earliest innovations in law, mathematics, astronomy, and literature, setting the foundations for civilization as we know it. So, step into the past, into the bustling streets of ancient Babylon. Marvel at its architectural wonders, immerse yourself in its vibrant marketplace, delve into the rich tapestry of knowledge in its grand library, and walk in the footsteps of the great kings. In Hunter for the Commodore Amiga, you are dropped into a 3D open-world archipelago that was decades ahead of its time. Released long before Grand Theft Auto III, this game featured a fully persistent world where you could drive cars, pilot boats, fly helicopters, and even ride a bicycle, all while navigating a day/night cycle. It’s essentially the 1991 blueprint for the modern "sandbox" genre!

Before Sensible Soccer became a legend, this 1989 Commodore Amiga football game changed everything with banana kicks, indoor arenas, and arcade chaos! 5 mind-blowing facts about MicroProse Soccer that prove it was ahead of its time. 1. The Forerunner to a Classic: Developed by Sensible Software (Jon Hare & Chris Yates) for the C64 in 1988 and ported to Amiga in 1989 by Electronic Pencil Company, it directly inspired the legendary Sensible Soccer series. Many call it "Sensible Soccer v0.1". 2. Pioneering Banana Kicks: One of the first games with after-touch! Hold the button and angle your shot for swerving "banana" kicks in three power levels — a game-changer that Kick Off later popularized. 3. Indoor 6-a-Side Mayhem: Besides full 11-a-side outdoor matches, it featured frantic indoor soccer on a smaller pitch with boards (inspired by the real Major Indoor Soccer League). 4. Many retro gamers still argue the C64 original feels snappier (are you one of them), but the Amiga version shines with better graphics and sound. 5. Inspired by an Arcade Hit: Jon Hare based it heavily on the 1985 arcade game Tehkan World Cup (Tecmo), adapting its top-down view and physics for joystick controls while adding original twists. Zzap magazine rated the Amiga version just 62%, did it deserve more?

Did you know B.B. King was a legit computer nerd? 🎸💾 The King of the Blues owned a Commodore 64 in the early 80s and fell completely in love with the Commodore Amiga starting in 1986. He had at least two Amigas on the road and a souped-up one in his Vegas studio. He called his main Amiga “Lucille II” and used it to write songs, program drums, lay down horn sections, and arrange entire tracks with software like Bars & Pipes and Deluxe Music Construction Set — then he’d just play Lucille live on top. Straight from a 1987 AmigaWorld magazine interview: “I use it primarily for learning songs… I enter melodies from sheet music and then play along in real-time with Lucille. It’s real useful and lots of fun.” While the rest of the music world was slow to go digital, B.B. was out here sequencing blues on an Amiga computer he grinningly called his second lady. Absolute legend — on stage and in the studio. 👑

The Babylon Bee is fighting censorship. In their new documentary, to cover the issues they faced, along with how Elon is being constantly attacked for his stance on free speech. Elon Musk is fighting this battle in the European Union and Brazil. Governments are trying to force X to remove content that they disapprove of, which counters govt approved narratives. The next 4 years Elon has Trump as an ally, but this battle will go for many more years after Trump is out of office. Watch the documentary from The Babylon Bee . It is in the link below and in my profile.

When I came on board at Hanna Barbera, the priority was THE REAL ADVENTURES JONNY QUEST (1996). The series is credited as one of the first animated television series to use motion capture technology for the CGI sequences in "QuestWorld," the virtual reality environment featured in the show. It was a novel approach at the time for an animated series. Because it was so ambitious, we had two separate teams working to keep up with the schedule. As crude as this might look, it was groundbreaking given the fact that it was done on a TV schedule and budget.

Any fans of this masterpiece? One of the few games I managed to finish (in 2 player mode with my brother) without using unlimited lives: Silkworm It's a classic horizontally scrolling shoot 'em up developed and published by Tecmo for arcades in 1988. You control either a heli (player 1) or a jeep (player 2) as they blast through enemy territory. And "blast" in the very sense of the word - great sound effects, epic explosions, and non-stop action. The helicopter offers free movement in the air, while the jeep drives on the ground, can jump over obstacles like mines, and has a turret that rotates to shoot in a 180 degree angle. Originally an arcade game, it was later ported to home computers like the Amiga (as in the video) and consoles. To me still one of the best games ever for the Amiga, and still playing it these days when my brother comes for a visit.

North & South on the Amiga – One of the most charming 16-bit takes on the Civil War! Infogrames brought the humor of the Belgian comic Les Tuniques Bleues to life in this 1989 Commodore Amiga classic. Pick the Union or Confederacy, conquer territory across the USA map, manage railroads for income, and dive into hilarious arcade-style battles. Pure strategy mixed with cartoon action! Here are 5 interesting facts about the Amiga version: 1. The game is directly based on the long-running Belgian comic series Les Tuniques Bleues by Raoul Cauvin and Willy Lambil. It keeps the light-hearted, satirical tone instead of a serious war sim, complete with cartoonish characters and animations. 2. Released in 1989 by Infogrames for Amiga and Atari ST. It was the original version, developed in-house with stunning colourful graphics, sampled sound effects, and a memorable soundtrack by Charles Callet that includes funny national anthem parodies depending on the language chosen. 3. Five languages supported right from the start: English, French, German, Spanish, and Italian. The menu has fun hidden touches, like clicking on the photographer's backside for a funny reaction. 4. Strategy meets arcade perfectly – move armies on the map to capture states, then switch to real-time mini-games when attacking forts (dodge cannon fire and plant dynamite) or trains (race along the tracks). Army battles let you command infantry, cavalry, and artillery with side-view chaos. 5. Excellent two-player support with hotseat or simultaneous play. The game is fast-paced, accessible, and sessions usually last 15-30 minutes, making it perfect for quick matches or long rivalries. A true Amiga classic that still holds up for its humour, presentation, and addictive blend of strategy and action. Who’s played it – North or South side?

I got my Amiga in summer 1986, so it's celebrating its 40th birthday these days. As with so many things in life you often appreciate them more when looking back. The Amiga was a truly remarkable computer, and for several years in the 80s it dominated the market (both in terms of hardware and software sales). Obviously, it did not stand a chance against the shift toward PCs and consoles in the 90s. However, it didn't just fade away over night but still gave us incredible games in its later years. I have long thought about what I personally consider to be the best action platfomer for the Amiga. I know some people will nominate Prince of Persia, but I think if you are more literal with the word action platformer, the vote should go to Turrican 2: The Final Fight. It is now entering its 35th year, being released in 1991, and still looks and sounds absolutely awesome. Super detailed and vibrant graphics, smooth scrolling, great weapon systems, and last but definitely not least, a banger soundtrack by legendary composer Chris Huelsbeck. The game showed what was still possible with the Amiga and easily rivaled even the high end console games of the time. If you ask me, Turrican 2 is the undisputed #1 action platformer for the Amiga. Agree or disagree?
