#UPDATE: CSFD Fire Investigators responded on Monday to the Marksheffel Rd. Fire and have determined that the cause of this fire was accidental likely due to dragging chains from a vehicle. As of Monday, March 11th at 1:30 pm the fire is at 640 acres with 90% containment. One CSFD brush truck will remain at the fire scene to patrol for hotspots. Fire crews are confident that the containment line will hold. JCSO Drone Unit Helps Firefighters Find Hidden Fire Yesterday afternoon, a caller from the Shiloh Farms area reported seeing smoke west of their location after a storm moved through. Deputies and firefighters initially believed dust from a nearby quarry may have been the source, but multiple 911 callers continued reporting intermittent smoke in the area. That is when teamwork and technology helped save the day. The JCSO Drone Unit launched a drone and located smoke coming from a peak in Golden Gate Canyon, giving firefighters exact GPS coordinates. Crews were then able to hike to the area and find a tree smoldering with nearby grass burned. They believe lightning from the passing storm struck the tree and started the fire. Arvada Fire, Golden Gate Fire Protection District, Jeffco Parks & Open Space, JCSO deputies, Jeffcom 911, and our JCSO Drone Unit all played a role in finding and extinguishing the fire before it could grow into something much larger. With the high fire danger we are experiencing, even a small fire can become a big problem fast. Working together, the drone pilot and dispatcher quickly guided responding officers to the location, leading to an arrest. When every second counts, eyes in the sky can make all the difference. We have flown more than 12,000 drone flights so far in 2026. Today, our drones are arriving on scene before officers more than 70% of the time. That means faster response, better situational awareness, better information for our officers, and ultimately safer outcomes for our community.

The Dallas Police Department’s new Drone as First Responder program officially launched today with eight remotely piloted drones based at Dallas Fire-Rescue stations across the City of Dallas. These drones are operated out of the Fusion/Real Time Crime Center and are designed to respond to calls for service in a two-mile radius from their base station. The base locations were selected based on heat maps of calls for service for both police and fire, placing them where they can potentially respond to the greatest number of calls. The pilots will be able to get to the scene quicker than in a squad car and begin to provide real-time intelligence and feedback to officers, as well as reduce the level of response or clear a call entirely if the incident has resolved. If a pilot sees a call in a drone’s response area where aerial intelligence can enhance officer safety, they can deploy a drone to provide critical updates to officers at the scene. Each drone is equipped with a thermal camera to help during nighttime operations, as well as a loudspeaker to make announcements to individuals on the ground. “I challenged our team to find innovative ways to continue improving our response times, and this new drone unit will not only keep officers free to respond to more calls, but provide real time updates as they are responding to calls,” said Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux. “Even during our training, our pilots were able to clear three holding calls in an hour with one drone. That alone proved their value to us, and I’m looking forward to seeing the benefits in both officer safety and response times.” Our public safety partners at Dallas Fire-Rescue will also be utilizing the Drone as First Responder program, with training for pilots underway. Under the new program, in the event of a reported structure fire, a drone will be dispatched to the scene ahead of arriving apparatus. Earlier this week around 3 a.m., officers responded to a report of a prowler at a construction site near K-10 and K-7 highways. Our officers quickly surrounded the area and deployed a drone to search from above. The drone operator soon spotted someone hiding under heavy construction equipment. With a coordinated plan in place, a team of officers, along with one of our K9s, moved in and took the suspect safely into custody. Further investigation revealed stolen tools from a Lenexa business, along with meth and drug paraphernalia. This same individual had been arrested by Lenexa officers earlier this year in connection with another business burglary. The Johnson County District Attorney's Office has charged this suspect with crimes related to both cases. To anyone thinking about committing crimes in Lenexa: our officers have the tools, training, and technology...and we will find you.

This needs to be a steady trend on the front – across all types of drones available to our units: from FPV to all others, including our long-range drones – which are already having a strategic impact on the war. Last night, Washoe County Sheriff’s Office DFR (Drone as First Responder) pilots used RapidSOS live 911 monitoring to launch one of our unmanned aerial vehicles, commonly known as a drone, in response to a report of a suspicious person in the backyard of a residence in Sparks. The drone was airborne and on scene within three minutes of the call being broadcast to patrol deputies. Once overhead, DFR pilots began canvassing the area and relaying real-time information to responding deputies. Using thermal imaging in low-light conditions, the drone successfully located the suspect in the backyard of a nearby residence on Cromwell Place. Pilots continued to provide live updates on the suspect’s location and behavior, allowing deputies to safely detain the individual without incident. Further investigation revealed the suspect, identified as Ryan Davis, 38, had forcibly entered a residence and moved through multiple neighboring backyards prior to being located. Davis was arrested and transported to the Washoe County Detention Facility, where he was booked on a felony charge of home invasion and an additional charge of trespassing. This incident highlights the outstanding coordination between patrol deputies and our DFR pilots, demonstrating how advanced aerial technology is not used for routine surveillance or to monitor lawful activity. DFRs are deployed for specific, time-limited public safety purposes—their use allows deputies to gain real-time situational awareness before making contact, often reducing the need for force and lowering risk to both the public and responding officers. When confronted by store security, the suspect fled east on foot. Fortunately, our Drone First Responder (DFR) program was already in the air and quickly located the suspect, tracking his movements to a nearby Arby’s at 80th Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard. Responding officers arrived and were able to safely identify and contact the suspect inside the restaurant. During the investigation, officers discovered the suspect had an active arrest warrant and was allegedly responsible for stealing more than $340 worth of merchandise from the store. The suspect was taken into custody without incident and transported to jail. The Drone First Responder program continues to provide officers with real-time information, helping improve response times and safely resolve incidents throughout our community.

Technology + teamwork = quick results Just a few weeks ago, officers arrested a burglary suspect in less than an hour thanks to a vigilant neighbor, the Real Time Information Center (RTIC) and APD's Drones as First Responders program. The incident began when a neighbor reported seeing a man enter a home's backyard and leave with a bicycle. Using live camera technology, RTIC quickly located a suspect matching the description riding a bicycle that matched the one reported stolen. Drone technology and real-time updates allowed officers to continuously track the suspect's movements, directing officers to his location within minutes. When officers contacted the suspect, he abandoned the bicycle and tried to run. But we were faster. Officers quickly took him into custody, recovered the stolen bike and other property taken from the residence, and arrested him on probable cause of theft, trespassing and obstructing. This case is another example of how APD's technology, combined with community members who report suspicious activity, helps officers locate suspects quickly, recover stolen property and keep our community safe. #autofire; The Auto Fire is now at 50% containment and 61 acres. Overnight, firefighter addresses small, isolated flare ups and stubborn pockets of heat across the fire perimeter. The fire remains static in its original footprint with no anticipated growth. Today, firefighters continue patrolling and reinforcing containment lines as well as addressing deep seated smoldering brush piles well inside the perimeter. Resources from VCFD and Ventura City Fire include Type 3 and Type 6 engines, a hand crew, water tender and one of our UAS / Drone pilots. Firefighters will remain on scene until this fire is fully contained. An IR flight of the fire by one of our UAS / Drone pilots shows the pockets of heat firefighters are working to address. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
