Turns out, the 3,000 Terafab jobs are just the opening act. Elon says they’re only for phase 1 of a 10-phase build. With investment potentially passing $100 billion, Terafab is being built to make the huge number of chips Tesla and SpaceX expect to need for FSD, Cybercab, Optimus, Starlink and Starship. Around $30K for a car that can drive itself, charge wirelessly, cost very little per mile, and skip most of the normal car-owner headaches. Then it gets more interesting. Sleep on the way. I still can’t believe the entire outer body of the Cybercab is PLASTIC. I think this is the first production Tesla vehicle built this way. Tesla molds the COLOR directly into the panels using reaction injection molding. Far from a traditional paint shop. A process that can take hours with normal automotive paint can now take minutes. Tesla says this cuts manufacturing emissions for those parts by around 35% and eliminates the paint VOCs from the traditional process. And before anyone says, “But what about safety?” The plastic exterior is not the crash structure. The massive front and rear giga castings underneath are doing that job. I rode in the Cybercab myself. Trust me, it does NOT feel cheap at all. It actually makes you realize what Tesla is trying to do here. Fewer parts. Fewer manufacturing steps. No traditional paint shop. Faster production. Lower cost. The unboxed process… This is so much more than Tesla just using plastic to make a cheap car. Tesla is completely rethinking how you build millions of robotaxis.

These are the people who could gain real independence from it. Braille controls. Room for service animals. Space for assistive devices. Seats at a better height for wheelchair transfers. Tesla’s new Megapack factory in Houston will be their most capable yet, with an annual production capacity of 50 GWh—25% more than their other two Megapack factories. Once fully ramped, Tesla’s three Megafactories will produce a combined 130 GWh of battery energy storage a year, enough to power ~50 million homes. That's nearly 4.2x more battery energy storage than Tesla deployed in all of 2024. The Houston facility will be the first to manufacture the all-new Megapack 3 in late 2026. This product will partly source LFP cells from Tesla's brand new LFP manufacturing plant in Nevada (next to Giga Nevada). The Nevada facility will begin production in the coming months, making it the first time Tesla will produce and source LFP cells domestically — and from its own operations. In light of the Cybercab event this week, here are my expectations: Of course the first official Robotaxi rides in a Cybercab will happen. Good chance it's limited to a certain portion of the geofence, especially for the launch event to avoid any edge cases I think Elon will say a few words. Likely nothing we don't already know - thanking the teams and explaining the importance of and vision for Cybercab Frankly though what happens at the event doesn't matter. It's what the Cybercab service looks like the following day. I think best case scenario would be Tesla having ~25 active Cybercabs operating in Austin for a majority of the operating hours (6A - 10P). I think we all need to be prepared for somehwere around ~5-10 Cybercabs to be active for a week or so after the event and then a slow build from there While we don't know how many active Robotaxis Tesla has in Austin, we can guess it's ~50-75 on any given day. I think increasing that fleet by up to 50% is the most we should be hoping for. I think the survey going around where ~50% of people are expecting > 100 Cybercabs to be deployed is overly optimistic. Not that it can't happen, and I'd love to be wrong, it would just be a stark departure from everything we've seen/heard so far This event shouldn't be viewed as a scaling announcement, but rather a beginning of operations and celebration of the Cybercab. I know Elon said over the weekend Tesla is "about to" flood Austin with Cybercabs, but in his mind that could mean later this year with V15, not this week Given Ashok's recent commentary about why they're going broad instead of deep (more different cities instead of higher fleet volume in each), I'd be more impressed with Cybercab starting operations in the other active Robotaxi cities in the following week or two after the event. To me, that would be a great signal that the validation is going well with Cybercab more generally, not just in the Austin geofence where Tesla has extensive data So while this is a huge milestone (no wheel, no pedals, purpose built for autonomy, cost profile, attention-grabbing design etc.), I'm still not expecting to see hundreds of Robotaxis in Austin or other cities until later this year or early '27 $TSLA
