We should not concede the narrative that data centers are causing rising electricity prices. The real cause is anti-fossil-fuel policies and bad permitting policies. The admin has reversed some anti-fossil-fuel policies. Now it needs to cut a major permitting reform deal—soon!

A critical issue that almost no one is talking about: a looming electricity shortage in our state. We’re seeing an AI data center boom (which is good), right at the time when we face supply constraints on baseload power generation. That math doesn’t work. Electricity costs could skyrocket & we don’t want rotating power outages akin to the third world (or California). We can’t sweep this issue under the rug any longer. I’ll unshackle energy production in Ohio, from fossil fuels to nuclear energy, without apology.

Germany shut down its last nuclear power plants in 2023. That decision removed 4 GW of reliable, low-cost baseload electricity. The plants were operational, they were paid for. And worse still, there was no replacement capacity ready. Germany turned to intermittent wind and solar backed by gas, imports, and emergency coal restarts. The obvious consequences followed. Electricity prices surged, grid reliability weakened, and fossil fuel use actually increased. Chancellor Friedrich Merz has now admitted the shutdown was a strategic mistake, calling Germany's energy transition the most expensive in the world. A reckless bending to extreme green ideology traded reliability and prosperity for optics. Working nuclear plants were destroyed. And for what?

Coal prices have risen internationally but Ukraine had nothing to do with #energy prices rising in Australia. Investment in #solar and #wind is to blame. It is important that the government in this country start facing reality and stop hiding the problem. The #Ukraine has nothing to do with #coal prices in this country. In fact, Australian coal prices did not rise at all under their existing long term contracts for our #coal-fired power stations. The government must stop misleading parliament that rising electricity prices in Australia are due to a war in the Ukraine. For 20 years, we've been told wind and solar are the cheapest forms of energy, yet prices keep going up! I questioned the AER about when Australians might see relief from these crushing power bills. Their response? No clear path to returning to the affordable prices we had just 5 years ago. The constraints on AI are essentially electricity and AI chips. China is very strong in digital AI, and it has far more electricity than the United States. In fact, China already has more electricity than the United States, Europe and India combined. The US government can prevent US companies from using Chinese models, but it can’t stop the rest of the world from using them. That won’t stop China from becoming the leader in AI.
