LB Pass Rush Drill - Coaches should teach pass rush techniques to linebackers using the same methods applied to defensive linemen. - The drill focuses on linebackers facing a blocker, such as an offensive lineman or a running back, who initiates contact by shooting their hands. - A key component of the technique is a violent pin of the blocker's elbow combined with a rip move. - As soon as the linebacker's hips clear the blocker, they must point their foot back toward the quarterback. - Players should aim to have their entire body tilted and pointed toward the quarterback after executing the move. - The final phase of the drill requires the linebacker to sprint off the block toward their target. Defensive Tracking Drills - Tracking drills begin with a simple block destruction where defenders work over the top. - Players must consistently gain ground by working downhill toward the ball carrier instead of shuffling too far away. - Effective tracking requires maintaining a hunkered or tilted body position with a forward lean while staying on the balls of the feet. - Defenders should stay square to the man they are tracking rather than staying square to the line of scrimmage. - The primary focus for defenders is to track the ball carrier's near hip to properly position themselves for potential cutbacks. - To finish the drill, players must explode through contact, ending with their near foot up and tagging the ball carrier's near knee. LB Track the Hip Drill - The "track the hip" drill is designed to create a sense of urgency for linebackers to reach the ball carrier. - Coaches should emphasize closing ground quickly to minimize the ball carrier's gain. - Players must maintain a downhill angle rather than a flat angle to ensure they meet the runner as soon as possible. - The goal is for the defender to make the tackle before the ball carrier reaches a specific designated line, such as the midsection of the drill area. - Linebackers need to remain aggressive and attack the ball carrier while maintaining proper leverage. - Using a "near foot, near foot" technique is essential for the tackler to successfully maintain leverage during the play. LB Box Tackle Drill - This drill is designed to practice attacking a ball carrier from an angle rather than focusing on a heavy Oklahoma-style collision. - Coaches should emphasize "taking the air away" by closing the space between the defender and the ball carrier. - During the tackle, the defender should aim to take a leg from the ball carrier to bring them down. - Footwork variety is important, and coaches can have players start the drill by either shuffling or using a crossover run. - At the point of contact, defenders must maintain "same foot, same shoulder" positioning to ensure a solid tackle. - For high-quality contact, the defender should be close enough to literally step on the ball carrier's toe. LB Tackle In Space Drill - The drill utilizes a reverse L-shaped setup with cones to force linebackers to work around obstacles while approaching a ball carrier in space. - A critical component of the drill is for the linebacker to aggressively close the distance between themselves and the offensive player before making contact. - Coaches should emphasize that elite linebackers must keep their hips and shoulders square upon contact to maintain leverage and power. - Players should avoid crossing their feet or "sitting in a chair" when approaching the tackle; instead, they must break down efficiently and maintain active feet through the strike. - The drill concludes by mimicking speed tackling techniques, where the defender focuses on getting to the hip and rolling through the finish. - This specific tackling progression is integrated into the regular season routine, with live tackling drills performed at least once a week to maintain sharp fundamentals. LB Search & Destroy Drill - The search and destroy drill is highly effective for linebackers when actions inside the box are cloudy or unclear. - Coaches can choose to have players either shuffle or use a crossover step to move from their starting point to the cone. - A primary emphasis of the drill is to ensure the linebacker keeps their shoulders, hips, and feet square once they reach the cone. - Linebackers must avoid crossing over their feet when making contact with the ball carrier. - The drill should be executed at a thud tempo during the teaching phase so both the linebacker and the ball carrier can feel the movement, with the ball carrier waiting to make a decision until the linebacker reaches the cone. - The drill is excellent for young linebackers to learn how to match the path of the running back and track where he is going, rather than just running blindly through gaps. LB Long Stride-Short Side Drill - The drill builds upon a box angle tackle progression but incorporates a long stride and short stride aspect to it. - Coaches should deepen the depth between the linebacker and the ball carrier for this specific drill. - Players usually utilize crossover footwork to run and close the distance to the ball carrier. - Players must use a long stride to close space, and then transition to a short stride to throttle their feet, widen their base, and get under control. - A critical coaching point is to keep the inside foot up rather than back, which prevents the ball carrier from cutting back and breaking the cup. - Coaches can incorporate a drop progression element into the drill, acting as the quarterback to get the linebacker set up before they come out of their break. LB Run Fits Drill The video outlines a linebacker drill designed to help players adjust their run fits based on the movement of defensive linemen. Key learning points include: - Dynamic Gap Fitting: Linebackers must be prepared to "make it right" rather than just fitting a pre-assigned gap if the defensive front is compromised. - Drill Setup: The drill utilizes a defensive lineman (represented by a coach with a bag) and a running back to simulate real-game scenarios. - Reacting to Defensive Line Movement: The linebacker must observe where the defensive lineman's head goes, such as a 3-technique getting knocked into an A-gap or a 2-eye getting reached or pushed into a B-gap. - Responding to Ball Carrier Cuts: Linebackers must mirror the running back’s cut and then "thud" him up to finish the tackle. - Redirecting and Filling: Players must practice redirecting their momentum; for example, if a linebacker expects to fill the B-gap but finds it occupied by a teammate, they must quickly jump cut or redirect to fill the new open gap. - Downhill Aggression: The goal of the drill is to train linebackers to see the opening and get downhill quickly to fill the vacant gap. DB Box Tackling Drill - The drill is set up using a five-yard spacing box with a popup dummy positioned in the center. - Defensive backs begin the drill in a pedal and must maintain an inside-out relationship to the ball carrier to properly win their leverage. - When a ball carrier cuts back, the defender should aim for a chest-to-chest tackle with eyes positioned below the ball carrier's eyes. - Effective tackling requires maintaining three bends in the body and creating knock-back through overexaggerated leg drive upon contact. - To eliminate cutback lanes, the defender must track the near hip and stay behind the ball carrier rather than getting even or in front of them. - Coaches should emphasize a drive-for-five mentality after contact and encourage defenders to rip at the ball to simulate a takeaway. LB 1-2 Step Tackling Progression - Linebackers should focus on using the near foot and near shoulder when initiating contact with a ball carrier. - Players must overemphasize swinging their arms in an uppercut motion to generate power through the contact point. - A core fundamental is to get a leg and take a leg, which involves squeezing and attempting to lift the opponent's leg during the tackle. - Coaches should look for players to have their face in contact and aimed at the center of the ball carrier's mass. - After making contact, defenders should overemphasize driving their feet for at least five steps to finish the play. - The tackling progression moves systematically from static contact to taking one step into contact and then two steps back to build consistency. DB Mirror Dodge Drill - Defensive backs should focus on maintaining their initial leverage while using proper footwork and hand placement to widen the wide receiver during the release. - Defensive backs must avoid putting their near hand in during an inside release because it locks their directional hip and prevents fluid movement. - Coaches should instruct players not to press or lean into an inside release, as this often causes the defender to fall underneath the route and lose positioning. - When a receiver takes an inside release on a vertical route, the defender must burst to stack the route by fighting to get back on top of the receiver. - Players need to understand their defensive help, such as whether they are in a man-free coverage, to decide how to handle a receiver crossing their leverage. - The primary goal for a defensive back on an inside release vertical is to win the rep from the top side rather than trying to slice back underneath the receiver.
