DB Hard Joint Technique Drill - In some goal-line and short-yardage situations, DBs must take on a block from a guard - Same foot, same shoulder concepts, reduce the blocking surface - Fullbacks will track the DB in power schemes like 22 or 32 personnel - Meet the blocker in the backfield and knock him back - Once the ball carrier gets inside of the DB, hard joint, squeeze, and punch the ball - The DB secures his area before spinning out to keep the ball from getting outside Andy LaRussa, Asst Head Coach, Western Kentucky Andy LaRussa #GlazierClinics

DB Finish Drills - The most important part of secondary play is the finish - Coaches need to work with players on not panicking at the end of the play - Every DB at every level is going to get beaten at some point - The difference between good and elite is not panicking and playing the football - Work on in phase, out of phase, and trail to finish on the ball - 2 ball drill - running downhill, finish and catch the football, then high point another ball - Put the DBs in different spots, different passes, give them landmarks to work through and finish Andy LaRussa, Asst Head Coach, Western Kentucky Andy LaRussa #GlazierClinics

LB 7 Cone Tackling Drill - The seven cone drill is specifically designed to prepare linebackers for open field tackling situations where they must effectively manage space. - A fundamental goal of the drill is for the defender to close the distance to the ball carrier, thereby taking away space and reducing the room available for maneuvers. - Coaches should emphasize maintaining leverage by staying inside out on the ball carrier, which forces the runner in a specific direction. - When approaching the ball carrier for a tackle, the linebacker should track the near hip and near number to ensure proper positioning. - The drill highlights the importance of the collision point, specifically teaching players to use the same foot and same shoulder to maximize power and safety. - As players progress to using pads, the drill can incorporate agility bags or crash mats to simulate speed tackles encountered on plays like screens, bubbles, and stretches. DB Box Tackling Drill - The drill is set up using a five-yard spacing box with a popup dummy positioned in the center. - Defensive backs begin the drill in a pedal and must maintain an inside-out relationship to the ball carrier to properly win their leverage. - When a ball carrier cuts back, the defender should aim for a chest-to-chest tackle with eyes positioned below the ball carrier's eyes. - Effective tackling requires maintaining three bends in the body and creating knock-back through overexaggerated leg drive upon contact. - To eliminate cutback lanes, the defender must track the near hip and stay behind the ball carrier rather than getting even or in front of them. - Coaches should emphasize a drive-for-five mentality after contact and encourage defenders to rip at the ball to simulate a takeaway. DB Catch Technique Drill - The starting point for a catch - DB is working on hot feet and cut off to his help - For the drill, their help is inside, so they work outside shoulder leverage - As the receiver comes inside, the DB should catch and low hip - No need to put hands on, run, and get in phase ways to play it - If he releases to the outside shoulder, the DB should capture him - If the receiver releases outside the cone, the DB runs to a cutoff position - No need to put hands on, run, and get in phase Andy LaRussa, Asst Head Coach, Western Kentucky Andy LaRussa #GlazierClinics

LB Box Tackle Drill - This drill is designed to practice attacking a ball carrier from an angle rather than focusing on a heavy Oklahoma-style collision. - Coaches should emphasize "taking the air away" by closing the space between the defender and the ball carrier. - During the tackle, the defender should aim to take a leg from the ball carrier to bring them down. - Footwork variety is important, and coaches can have players start the drill by either shuffling or using a crossover run. - At the point of contact, defenders must maintain "same foot, same shoulder" positioning to ensure a solid tackle. - For high-quality contact, the defender should be close enough to literally step on the ball carrier's toe. DB Press Man Release Drill - Occasionally, safeties will press, so they need to work man coverage releases - In the drill, the receiver has a five-yard window to release - They need to stay between the two lines and work to stack - If the DB can widen them outside, they have done their job - WKU likes to be a yard off the ball when they're working press - In press coverage, they think of a basketball analogy of playing one-on-one - Force the receiver to "take a jump shot" and not get dunked on Andy LaRussa, Asst Head Coach, Western Kentucky Andy LaRussa #GlazierClinics

LB Long Stride-Short Side Drill - The drill builds upon a box angle tackle progression but incorporates a long stride and short stride aspect to it. - Coaches should deepen the depth between the linebacker and the ball carrier for this specific drill. - Players usually utilize crossover footwork to run and close the distance to the ball carrier. - Players must use a long stride to close space, and then transition to a short stride to throttle their feet, widen their base, and get under control. - A critical coaching point is to keep the inside foot up rather than back, which prevents the ball carrier from cutting back and breaking the cup. - Coaches can incorporate a drop progression element into the drill, acting as the quarterback to get the linebacker set up before they come out of their break. DB Block Destruction Turnover Drill - Working to incorporate several facets in the drill - Block destruction, then scoop and score or strip attempts - Stalk block - strike shed, keep hands inside - If the hands are outside, the DB will lose more times than not - Most receivers don't want to block - The more aggressive you can be, the better off you are Andy LaRussa, Asst Head Coach, Western Kentucky Andy LaRussa #GlazierClinics

LB Search & Destroy Drill - The search and destroy drill is highly effective for linebackers when actions inside the box are cloudy or unclear. - Coaches can choose to have players either shuffle or use a crossover step to move from their starting point to the cone. - A primary emphasis of the drill is to ensure the linebacker keeps their shoulders, hips, and feet square once they reach the cone. - Linebackers must avoid crossing over their feet when making contact with the ball carrier. - The drill should be executed at a thud tempo during the teaching phase so both the linebacker and the ball carrier can feel the movement, with the ball carrier waiting to make a decision until the linebacker reaches the cone. - The drill is excellent for young linebackers to learn how to match the path of the running back and track where he is going, rather than just running blindly through gaps. LB Track the Hip Drill - The "track the hip" drill is designed to create a sense of urgency for linebackers to reach the ball carrier. - Coaches should emphasize closing ground quickly to minimize the ball carrier's gain. - Players must maintain a downhill angle rather than a flat angle to ensure they meet the runner as soon as possible. - The goal is for the defender to make the tackle before the ball carrier reaches a specific designated line, such as the midsection of the drill area. - Linebackers need to remain aggressive and attack the ball carrier while maintaining proper leverage. - Using a "near foot, near foot" technique is essential for the tackler to successfully maintain leverage during the play. Linebacker Triangle Drill LB Drills for Success - Ball carrier can start by going right or left - Don't grab cloth on the pop-off - Just pop the blocker to create enough power and separation where he can't latch on to the linebacker - Run back, reset, and go the opposite direction - The coach lets the linebacker know right or left foot lead - That determines if he is peeking left or peeking right - The ball carrier watches the coaches hand for which way to attack Archie McDaniel, Linebackers Coach, Illinois Archie McDaniel #GlazierClinics

Great drill for ILB's to learn to leverage the ball, and fit correctly. Also, you can work same foot / same shoulder strike point without a lot of impact. Added a great conditioning drill below to work inside-out leverage on ball carrier. .Prizmatic Solutions always has great drills

Ferris State HC Tony Annese - Mesh (QB/Ball Carrier) & Motion Fundamentals QB Mesh Fundamentals - Regardless of play, the first thing the QB needs to do to make sure he has a good mesh is stab the ball back off his hip towards the ball carrier as far as he can. - His arms should be straightened with his eyes at the HOK. - The ball should move with the back through his track. - If the ball is pulled the decision must be made by the time the ball gets to the QB's front hip. Ball Carrier Mesh Fundamentals - The potential ball carrier is the one that is responsible for his track. He needs to make sure his is at the mesh point that the QB is creating. - He must maintain a pocket that is firm enough to secure the ball but loose enough that the QB can pull the ball if the read is a pull read. - Do not deviate from the track until you fully clear the mesh. - If you do not get the ball then track away from the HOK and make him chase you. Motion Fundamentals - All of our motions start up at FULL SPEED! It is incredibly important to make every motion at full speed so the QB has a consistent timing. - The QB is responsible for sending the motion back on every play except for the triple option. - This allows us to control each motion easier. - Every Jet motion should be timed as if the jet back was getting the ball regardless of play. - The motion back will change his depth based on play. - This allows us to use motion with a multitude of schemes. - The motion stops at different spots on different plays and each perimeter player must understand where he should stop for each play.

2v2 Score Game! All players start at the 10. Coach throws the ball into 1 of the offensive players. Ball carrier must touch the 20y line then they can score. Offensive player without the ball has to touch the hash or sideline before they can block. Defenders mirror the offense. If you’re on the ball carrier side you have to touch the end zone. Blocker side defender must touch the same time hash or sideline. Sometimes I’m not a fan of 2v2+ drills as there’s too much info to process, but this was a sweet spot of action and reading + reacting. Good drill that’s gonna stay in the rotation for sure!

Linebackers!🚨🚨🚨 This is a great drill for linebackers! This drill is great for reaction, coming out of your stance, angle tackling, footwork, change of direction, flipping the hips, avoiding blocks by using your hands, and violent arms to wrap up the ball carrier! #LBU
