"L2s aren't generating fees for the L1, the L1 doesn't accrue value." That's like saying, when Facebook launched mobile: "Facebook, you’re not charging money for mobile." The more people used Facebook, the more valuable it became as a platform for advertising. Network effects kicked in, and today Facebook dominates advertising. It makes sense to let the L2s grow and create a huge ecosystem. The problem with most Bitcoin Layer 2s being worked on today - including Lightning, Ark, pretty much every BitVM-bridged L2, etc - is that they don't meaningfully contribute to Bitcoin's security budget. There exists a fundamental tension between the need for Bitcoin scaling solutions - which ostensibly take txs (and fees) out of blocks - and the need to bolster Bitcoin's security budget with fees as the block subsidy declines. This is something Drivechains almost certainly gets right - L2s that merge mine are incentive-aligned with miners in a way that other L2s fundamentally are not. Paul Sztorc believes this incentive-misalignment will ultimately doom most of the L2s getting attention right now as a result... curious what folks think about this.
