Denzel Washington’s performance in Flight would’ve probably won him an #Oscar in any other year but 2013, where he ran into Daniel Day-Lewis who won for Lincoln. It’s hard to say whether Denzel deserved this over DDL but this is truly one of Washington’s best performances ever.

Denzel Washington’s Oscar-nominated performance in Flight has to be at the top of the list when ranking Denzel’s best work. Had he not run into Daniel Day-Lewis for Lincoln, Denzel would’ve undeniably won a second Oscar for Best Actor. Denzel is unhinged here- he’s just totally off the rails & his performance has so much range. This guy is just totally unpredictable as an actor & I cannot get enough. I love Flight.

Russell Crowe nearly won back-to-back Best Actor Oscars in 2002 when he almost won the award a second time for A Beautiful Mind. The problem Crowe ran into is Denzel Washington’s work in Training Day released the same year. No one was beating Denzel- but Crowe came damn close.

Born on the Fourth of July nearly won Tom Cruise an Oscar for Best Actor back in 1990, but Cruise ran into the force of nature that is Daniel Day-Lewis, who won for My Left Foot. This is a painful story about the sacrifices veterans make & it’s some of Cruise’s best acting. I think the Cruise-Oliver Stone pairing is interesting in hindsight. 26 years later, Cruise might finally get that Oscar for Digger.

Al Pacino only has one #Oscar. That is a travesty. I know everyone always mentions Denzel should’ve won for Malcom X instead of Pacino for Scent of a Woman, but even though Al should’ve won for other films, this was still an all-time great performance from Pacino. He’s electric.

Daniel Day-Lewis has won the #Oscar for Best Actor on three occasions & each time, he’s demonstrated a level of class that I think is hard to replicate. His speech here after winning his latest award for Lincoln is tremendous. I still think DDL has another Academy Award in him.

When J.K. Simmons won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for Whiplash in 2015, it felt like the most surefire win in recent Oscar memory. Simmons won nearly every award leading up to the Oscars & he deserved every last one. This is still one of my favorite performances ever.

I didn’t initially love The Book of Eli when I first saw it in theaters, but after a few rewatches, I’ve really grown to appreciate Denzel Washington’s performance in this film. You start to see why Denzel took this role after multiple viewings. Gary Oldman is also fantastic here

Lincoln was released on this day in 2012. Daniel Day-Lewis stayed in character as Lincoln during filming, insisting on being called "Mr. President." The role won him his third Best Actor Oscar, tying him with Jack Nicholson and Walter Brennan for the most Oscars won by a male.

Gary Oldman probably shouldn’t have won the Oscar for The Darkest Hour. I revisited DDL in Phantom Thread & Timothee Chalamet in Call Me By Your Name- both deserved to win the Oscar over Oldman in 2018. This isn’t even a top 3 Oldman performance all-time. Good but not great.

Al Pacino is one of the reasons I fell in love with cinema- he’s one of the reasons I started this account. I know Denzel in Malcom X deserved the Oscar back in ‘93, but I will always love Pacino’s performance in Scent of a Woman. Over the top? Sure. But it’s vintage Pacino.

Denzel Washington just narrowly missed a third Oscar for his performance in Fences when he lost the award to Casey Affleck for Manchester by the Sea. Both Affleck & Washington were impossibly good- just unlucky for Denzel they ran into each other. He’s so good in this film.

Christian Bale won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his work in The Fighter & while I don’t really love this film, I love this performance. In fact, the entire film is worth watching because of multiple performances from a loaded cast. But Bale is truly at his best here.
