So basically, wait a couple of months, and AMD will have a mid range card out that supports RDNA 4 features for half the cost of the PS5 Pro. What a time to love PC gaming.

New Mark Cerny PS5 Pro Technical Seminar. Some interesting info. GPU is a hybrid of RDNA tech Base tech - RDNA2.X (RDNA2 + 3) Ray Tracing - RDNA4 Machine Learning - Custom Not fully RDNA3 to reduce workload for ports/code. Doesn't have RDNA3 shader executables and double floating point calculations, though it does have other RDNA3 and custom features such as extra vertex and primitive processing, more shader instructions for ML etc. Not having double FP is why Tflop count is 16.7 Tflop and not 33.5 Tflop, but Tflop count difference is "meaningless", esp to real world performance, and they didn't need 32bit calculation bump. Though interestingly PS5 Pro still retains 8 operations per lane for 67 Tflops of 16bit performance. Custom ML hardware has 300 TOPS of performance. PS5 Pro also has over 1GB of extra GDDR6 ram for games vs PS5, thanks to extra DDR5 system ram that many OS operations have been moved on to. Ray Tracing is roughly 2-3x faster than equivalent PS5 performance. Path Tracing on PS5 Pro even as a demo and at 30fps, pretty much confirms at least some games will use PT on PS6, which I said months ago but some said I was crazy for suggesting. PC gamers won't want to admit it, but next-gen the gap between console and higher end PC may shrink in terms of real world differences, bolstered by more competent RT and AI upscaling tech in the next-gen consoles. Keep in mind Valve already confirmed what Steam data already showed, that "the steam machine is equal or better than ~70% of what people have at home", and the Steam Machine is reportedly similar in perfomance to the BASE PS5. In regards to PT in F1 on PS5 Pro, I say drop the base resolution further (there's examples of PSSR 2 looking great even at 864p) and give us 40fps or higher. Also, this is a reason the future/RDNA4 RT tech and custom AI hardware in PS5 Pro was noteworthy. The "2-3x" PS5's RT performance Cerny quoted clearly wasn't just PR bluster. Outside of this demo, it's already allowing WAY better RT than PS5 in some games (Cyberpunk, F1, AC Shadows etc), with better image quality and/or perfomance to boot. Such demo's show there's potentially more to extract, especially for quality modes. #PS5Pro #PS6

It's PS5 RDNA 1.5 all over again, and reading responses, like a certain fandom never gets tired of being let down or uninformed. There's reasons PS5 often outperforms Xbox Series X despite the latter having 44% more compute than PS5 and being "full RDNA 2", which Digital Foundry did a video on. As I said at the start of the gen, most RDNA2 features Xbox/PC fans claim PS5 is missing, it was unlikely to use as they're Microsoft DirectX RDNA tie in features, and PS5 doesn't use DX but instead its own proprietary custom API called AGC. Why would PlayStation push for Microsoft DirectX RDNA features, when they don't use DirectX? Any AGC API specific graphics features PS5 uses (that Xbox wouldn't have) are not widely publicly advertised, as PlayStation don't need to advertise them the way Microsoft does due to their PC DirectX market. Thus every customisation PS5 has (which Kepler seemingly glosses over or doesn't recognise), from its faster clockspeeds, cache scrubbers, I/O set up, CPU alleviating decompression, DMA controllers and processors, geometry engine etc, will have been specifically designed around AGC or vice versa, NOT DirectX RDNA2 features. PS6 will be no different. There may be DirectX RDNA5 features they do not need or use, but there will inevitably be other unique customisations of their own and for their OWN proprietary API instead, no doubt bolstered by Amethyst custom features from their partnership with AMD. If history is any indicator, PlayStation is right to prioritise their own API and modifications, as these tend to have greater cost to perfomance results for the hardware vs the competition. I tested out Cyberpunk 2077 Path Tracing turned on with RX 9070 XT now that FSR Redstone is out. By using the new FSR Redstone and FSR ML Based Frame-Gen, the game reaches up to 130FPS in 1440p with FSR set to Performance Mode. The performance gains are not that much higher compared to the previous versions of FSR but the image quality got a huge upgrade, especially when using Frame-Gen. This ML based Frame Gen is much better than the previous version as it gets rid of most artifacts and ghosting caused by the previous version. If for some reason you always wanted to play Cyberpunk 2077 with Path Tracing turned on on an AMD GPU, now you can enjoy a playable experience with 100+ FPS on an RX 9070 XT. I still don't recommend it though as the frame pacing and input lag still feels off for me, I'd just rather play this without Frame Gen and Path Tracing. I'm going to test out Black Myth: Wukong next

Dylan Patel of SemiAnalysis says a worse GPU with better storage and memory now beats the best chip without them, so buying the newest GPU alone no longer wins inference. So, an AMD GPU with more memory can outperform Nvidia in some cases. "So what we have is we have over $80 million of compute, GPUs from Nvidia, AMD, TPUs from Google, Trainium from Amazon, and we run this benchmark constantly on the newest inference engine, newest drivers, newest PyTorch version, whatever it is." "Every day it runs on an automated CI, and we run it on all the latest Chinese models, from GLM, Zhipu, Moonshot, Kimi, Alibaba, all these models we run." "Initially, when we were benchmarking the difference between these chips and different engines, different schemes for parallelism, we were just running it fixed context length." Cliff Asness (the co-founder of AQR, who manages billions) on the one belief about that most of his peers would disagree with: "as we move into a world where machine learning is becoming a bigger part of the quant toolkit, we are big believers that economic intuition as a restraint on overfitting is still pretty important." "finance is still a high noise to signal ratio place. in that world, overfitting is a problem." "but one thing ML has done is point out that underfitting is also a problem. and you have to balance the two." "not using these techniques was probably underfitting and missing some of the true complication." this is the most balanced take on ML in trading i've heard. it's both problems exist simultaneously and the skill is balancing them. but for the regular retail trader, I would still say stay far away from machine learning, you will likely just overfit.

Oliver adds "especially if you're looking at an unsubsidised box on one end, subsidised box on the other end, there could be a substantial price price premium you're paying for that performance." Whereas PS6 seems to be a die around PS5 Pro size, as it's a very svelte die that's monolithic, so that should be cheaper to produce just by its nature as well" Considering #PS5 is also launching AFTER #Xbox Helix, and is likely to come with more mature or advanced Project Amethyst features or customisations, and Helix might not have tenrpole Xbox exclusives either, next-gen could be one where the new Xbox hardware is considerably worse value proposition vs PlayStation hardware, more so than all prior gens.

Gavin Baker (Gavin Baker) says the disaggregation of inference can extend GPU useful lives from 3-4 years to 10-15. That may single-handedly save private credit and reduce the financing rates for GPUs, which will drive demand and help finance the build-out. "The disaggregation of prefill and inference is going to be amazing for the useful lives of GPU and may single-handedly save private credit. Private credit is in pain from these SaaS loans. But there's a lot of private credit in GPUs too. They were underwriting that to 3-4. The disaggregation of inference means that these GPUs are going to have 10 or 15-year lives. The AI skeptics are like, "Oh, these companies are all cooking their books. The useful life of a GPU is only a year or two. The useful life of a CPU is only four years because the rapid technological change." No. What rapid technological change has done with the disaggregation of prefill and inference is you can put a Cerebras system or Groq LPUs effectively in front of a Hopper or even an Ampere, use that Hopper and Ampere for prefill, and extend the useful life of that GPU until it melts. This is going to be really good for the whole private credit industry. It's gonna help finance the AI build-out. Because if you can start to finance GPUs at 5% or 6% instead of – I think CoreWeave's lowest financing was low sevens – that actually mathematically changes the cost to finance this build-out."

No. What rapid technological change has done with the disaggregation of prefill and inference is you can put a Cerebras system or Groq LPUs effectively in front of a Hopper or even an Ampere, use that Hopper and Ampere for prefill, and extend the useful life of that GPU until it melts. This is going to be really good for the whole private credit industry. It's gonna help finance the AI build-out. Because if you can start to finance GPUs at 5% or 6% instead of – I think CoreWeave's lowest financing was low sevens – that actually mathematically changes the cost to finance this build-out."

The problem is you went from a dynamic where their customer base was like every corporation in the world and therefore they had fragmentation and it was a really good business. Going forward it's highly unlikely that LLMs are not concentrated in the hands of 4 or 5 companies. Those companies right now, are cashflow negative, and therefore they're looking for compute anywhere they can get it. In the next 5 to 10 years, they'll be generating enormous amounts of free cash flow. When that happens, they're likely to insource the compute. Right now, they look at the hyperscalers as more of a financing mechanism. But I don't think they are better than the LLMs at building data centers. Then you have this dynamic of neoclouds. I don't think they're going away like people thought, because they're better at running GPU clusters than the traditional hyperscalers, and there's a lot of interest from NVIDIA to make sure that their customer base is diversified."
