Blended-NeRF: Zero-Shot Object Generation and Blending in Existing Neural Radiance Fields paper page: Editing a local region or a specific object in a 3D scene represented by a NeRF is challenging, mainly due to the implicit nature of the scene representation. Consistently blending a new realistic object into the scene adds an additional level of difficulty. We present Blended-NeRF, a robust and flexible framework for editing a specific region of interest in an existing NeRF scene, based on text prompts or image patches, along with a 3D ROI box. Our method leverages a pretrained language-image model to steer the synthesis towards a user-provided text prompt or image patch, along with a 3D MLP model initialized on an existing NeRF scene to generate the object and blend it into a specified region in the original scene. We allow local editing by localizing a 3D ROI box in the input scene, and seamlessly blend the content synthesized inside the ROI with the existing scene using a novel volumetric blending technique. To obtain natural looking and view-consistent results, we leverage existing and new geometric priors and 3D augmentations for improving the visual fidelity of the final result. We test our framework both qualitatively and quantitatively on a variety of real 3D scenes and text prompts, demonstrating realistic multi-view consistent results with much flexibility and diversity compared to the baselines. Finally, we show the applicability of our framework for several 3D editing applications, including adding new objects to a scene, removing/replacing/altering existing objects, and texture conversion.

Nvidia announces GAvatar: Animatable 3D Gaussian Avatars with Implicit Mesh Learning paper page: Gaussian splatting has emerged as a powerful 3D representation that harnesses the advantages of both explicit (mesh) and implicit (NeRF) 3D representations. In this paper, we seek to leverage Gaussian splatting to generate realistic animatable avatars from textual descriptions, addressing the limitations (e.g., flexibility and efficiency) imposed by mesh or NeRF-based representations. However, a naive application of Gaussian splatting cannot generate high-quality animatable avatars and suffers from learning instability; it also cannot capture fine avatar geometries and often leads to degenerate body parts. To tackle these problems, we first propose a primitive-based 3D Gaussian representation where Gaussians are defined inside pose-driven primitives to facilitate animation. Second, to stabilize and amortize the learning of millions of Gaussians, we propose to use neural implicit fields to predict the Gaussian attributes (e.g., colors). Finally, to capture fine avatar geometries and extract detailed meshes, we propose a novel SDF-based implicit mesh learning approach for 3D Gaussians that regularizes the underlying geometries and extracts highly detailed textured meshes. Our proposed method, GAvatar, enables the large-scale generation of diverse animatable avatars using only text prompts. GAvatar significantly surpasses existing methods in terms of both appearance and geometry quality, and achieves extremely fast rendering (100 fps) at 1K resolution.

LLaVA-3D A Simple yet Effective Pathway to Empowering LMMs with 3D-awareness Recent advancements in Large Multimodal Models (LMMs) have greatly enhanced their proficiency in 2D visual understanding tasks, enabling them to effectively process and understand images and videos. However, the development of LMMs with 3D-awareness for 3D scene understanding has been hindered by the lack of large-scale 3D vision-language datasets and powerful 3D encoders. In this paper, we introduce a simple yet effective framework called LLaVA-3D. Leveraging the strong 2D understanding priors from LLaVA, our LLaVA-3D efficiently adapts LLaVA for 3D scene understanding without compromising 2D understanding capabilities. To achieve this, we employ a simple yet effective representation, 3D Patch, which connects 2D CLIP patch features with their corresponding positions in 3D space. By integrating the 3D Patches into 2D LMMs and employing joint 2D and 3D vision-language instruction tuning, we establish a unified architecture for both 2D image understanding and 3D scene understanding. Experimental results show that LLaVA-3D converges 3.5x faster than existing 3D LMMs when trained on 3D vision-language datasets. Moreover, LLaVA-3D not only achieves state-of-the-art performance across various 3D tasks but also maintains comparable 2D image understanding and vision-language conversation capabilities with LLaVA.

We have seen a lot of legged robots doing navigation in the wild. But how about mobile manipulation in the wild? I have been pushing the direction of learning a unified, efficient, and dynamic 3D representation of scenes (for navigation) and objects (for manipulation) for the past two years. And now we have GeFF --- our large-scale, generalizable feature field, that combines the speed of a feed-forward neural network with the rich semantics from Foundation Models, to handle dynamically changing scenes, and enable open-ended, language-grounded scene and object understanding.

LP-MusicCaps: LLM-Based Pseudo Music Captioning paper page: Automatic music captioning, which generates natural language descriptions for given music tracks, holds significant potential for enhancing the understanding and organization of large volumes of musical data. Despite its importance, researchers face challenges due to the costly and time-consuming collection process of existing music-language datasets, which are limited in size. To address this data scarcity issue, we propose the use of large language models (LLMs) to artificially generate the description sentences from large-scale tag datasets. This results in approximately 2.2M captions paired with 0.5M audio clips. We term it Large Language Model based Pseudo music caption dataset, shortly, LP-MusicCaps. We conduct a systemic evaluation of the large-scale music captioning dataset with various quantitative evaluation metrics used in the field of natural language processing as well as human evaluation. In addition, we trained a transformer-based music captioning model with the dataset and evaluated it under zero-shot and transfer-learning settings. The results demonstrate that our proposed approach outperforms the supervised baseline model.

Progressively Optimized Local Radiance Fields for Robust View Synthesis paper page: present an algorithm for reconstructing the radiance field of a large-scale scene from a single casually captured video. The task poses two core challenges. First, most existing radiance field reconstruction approaches rely on accurate pre-estimated camera poses from Structure-from-Motion algorithms, which frequently fail on in-the-wild videos. Second, using a single, global radiance field with finite representational capacity does not scale to longer trajectories in an unbounded scene. For handling unknown poses, we jointly estimate the camera poses with radiance field in a progressive manner. We show that progressive optimization significantly improves the robustness of the reconstruction. For handling large unbounded scenes, we dynamically allocate new local radiance fields trained with frames within a temporal window. This further improves robustness (e.g., performs well even under moderate pose drifts) and allows us to scale to large scenes. Our extensive evaluation on the Tanks and Temples dataset and our collected outdoor dataset, Static Hikes, show that our approach compares favorably with the state-of-the-art.

Our goal is to advance the state-of-the-art by placing emphasis on long videos with naturalistic motion. Toward the goal of naturalism, we animate deformable characters using real-world motion capture data, we build 3D scenes to match the motion capture environments, and we render camera viewpoints using trajectories mined via structure-from-motion on real videos. We create combinatorial diversity by randomizing character appearance, motion profiles, materials, lighting, 3D assets, and atmospheric effects. Our dataset currently includes 104 videos, averaging 2,000 frames long, with orders of magnitude more correspondence annotations than prior work. We show that existing methods can be trained from scratch in our dataset and outperform the published variants. Finally, we introduce modifications to the PIPs point tracking method, greatly widening its temporal receptive field, which improves its performance on PointOdyssey as well as on two real-world benchmarks.

MVDream: Multi-view Diffusion for 3D Generation paper page: propose MVDream, a multi-view diffusion model that is able to generate geometrically consistent multi-view images from a given text prompt. Differentiable Blocks World: Qualitative 3D Decomposition by Rendering Primitives paper page: Given a set of calibrated images of a scene, we present an approach that produces a simple, compact, and actionable 3D world representation by means of 3D primitives. While many approaches focus on recovering high-fidelity 3D scenes, we focus on parsing a scene into mid-level 3D representations made of a small set of textured primitives. Such representations are interpretable, easy to manipulate and suited for physics-based simulations. Moreover, unlike existing primitive decomposition methods that rely on 3D input data, our approach operates directly on images through differentiable rendering. Specifically, we model primitives as textured superquadric meshes and optimize their parameters from scratch with an image rendering loss. We highlight the importance of modeling transparency for each primitive, which is critical for optimization and also enables handling varying numbers of primitives. We show that the resulting textured primitives faithfully reconstruct the input images and accurately model the visible 3D points, while providing amodal shape completions of unseen object regions. We compare our approach to the state of the art on diverse scenes from DTU, and demonstrate its robustness on real-life captures from BlendedMVS and Nerfstudio. We also showcase how our results can be used to effortlessly edit a scene or perform physical simulations.

⚡️📣👇Tremendously excited to share our new Cell article, where we develop TriPath, a method for analyzing 3D pathology samples using weakly supervised AI. Article: TriPath enables 3D computational pathology via 3D multiple instance learning allowing AI models to capture intricate morphological details from pathology volumes. Code: Blog post: Tested on two different imaging modalities, and patient cohorts from two institutions. Our superstar Andrew H. Song put in a monumental effort of leading the study, in a fantastic collaboration with Jonathan Liu at University of Washington . Interesting aspects: - Utilizing the whole tissue volume and leveraging 3D deep learning enable superior risk prediction performance compared to 2D deep learning baselines based on a few sampled tissue sections that emulate standard clinical practice. This indicates TriPath can harness additional information provided by 3D tissue morphology. - The performance is also superior to clinical baselines from a reader study that involved six expert pathologists. - The morphologically heterogeneous tissue volume could lead to opposing patient-level outcome predictions, dependent on which portion of the tissue volume is used. This concurs with current clinical literature warning that tissue sampling bias can lead to misdiagnosis. Some limitations: - While the 3D pathology cohort size is unprecedented, it is smaller than typical 2D pathology cohorts. Further large-scale studies will be required for validation. Nevertheless, we believe that this study will initiate a positive cycle, encouraging academic institutions and pharmaceutical companies to contribute large banks of human tissue blocks with paired clinical outcomes, thus speeding up advancements in 3D computational pathology. Concluding insights: We believe that 3D pathology is just around the corner - It has the huge potential to not only augment/improve the current clinical practice centered around 2D examination of human tissue, but also help reveal novel biomarkers for prognosis and therapeutic response.. ⚡️📣👇Tremendously excited to share our new Cell article, where we develop TriPath, a method for analyzing 3D pathology samples using weakly supervised AI. Article: TriPath enables 3D computational pathology via 3D multiple instance learning allowing AI models to capture intricate morphological details from pathology volumes. Code: Blog post: Tested on two different imaging modalities, and patient cohorts from two institutions. Our superstar Andrew H. Song put in a monumental effort of leading the study, in a fantastic collaboration with Jonathan Liu at University of Washington . Interesting aspects: - Utilizing the whole tissue volume and leveraging 3D deep learning enable superior risk prediction performance compared to 2D deep learning baselines based on a few sampled tissue sections that emulate standard clinical practice. This indicates TriPath can harness additional information provided by 3D tissue morphology. - The performance is also superior to clinical baselines from a reader study that involved six expert pathologists. - The morphologically heterogeneous tissue volume could lead to opposing patient-level outcome predictions, dependent on which portion of the tissue volume is used. This concurs with current clinical literature warning that tissue sampling bias can lead to misdiagnosis. Some limitations: - While the 3D pathology cohort size is unprecedented, it is smaller than typical 2D pathology cohorts. Further large-scale studies will be required for validation. Nevertheless, we believe that this study will initiate a positive cycle, encouraging academic institutions and pharmaceutical companies to contribute large banks of human tissue blocks with paired clinical outcomes, thus speeding up advancements in 3D computational pathology. Concluding insights: We believe that 3D pathology is just around the corner - It has the huge potential to not only augment/improve the current clinical practice centered around 2D examination of human tissue, but also help reveal novel biomarkers for prognosis and therapeutic response.. 4DGT: Learning a 4D Gaussian Transformer Using Real-World Monocular Videos Abstract: We propose 4DGT, a 4D Gaussian-based Transformer model for dynamic scene reconstruction, trained entirely on real-world monocular posed videos. Using 4D Gaussian as an inductive bias, 4DGT unifies static and dynamic components, enabling the modeling of complex, time-varying environments with varying object lifespans. We introduced a novel density control strategy in training, which allows our 4DGT to handle longer space-time input while maintaining efficient rendering at runtime. Our model processes 64 consecutive posed frames in a rolling-window fashion, predicting consistent 4D Gaussians in the scene. Unlike optimization-based methods, 4DGT performs purely feed-forward inference, reducing reconstruction time from hours to seconds and scaling effectively to long video sequences. Trained only on large-scale monocular posed video datasets, 4DGT can significantly outperform prior Gaussian-based networks in real-world videos and achieve on-par accuracy with optimization-based methods on cross-domain videos.

Fast View Synthesis of Casual Videos paper page: Novel view synthesis from an in-the-wild video is difficult due to challenges like scene dynamics and lack of parallax. While existing methods have shown promising results with implicit neural radiance fields, they are slow to train and render. This paper revisits explicit video representations to synthesize high-quality novel views from a monocular video efficiently. We treat static and dynamic video content separately. Specifically, we build a global static scene model using an extended plane-based scene representation to synthesize temporally coherent novel video. Our plane-based scene representation is augmented with spherical harmonics and displacement maps to capture view-dependent effects and model non-planar complex surface geometry. We opt to represent the dynamic content as per-frame point clouds for efficiency. While such representations are inconsistency-prone, minor temporal inconsistencies are perceptually masked due to motion. We develop a method to quickly estimate such a hybrid video representation and render novel views in real time. Our experiments show that our method can render high-quality novel views from an in-the-wild video with comparable quality to state-of-the-art methods while being 100x faster in training and enabling real-time rendering.

In my past research experience, finding or developing an appropriate simulation environment, dataset, and benchmark has always been a challenge. Missing features, limited support, or unexpected bugs often occupied my days and nights. Moreover, current simulation platforms are relatively fragmented—making it challenging to replicate the success of the RT-X dataset in unifying community efforts. Introducing RoboVerse, we provide a unified platform, dataset, and benchmark for scalable and generalizable robot learning. We hope to build a shared foundation to combine the community efforts. RoboVerse includes: MetaSim: We carefully designed a configuration system and a universal interface to align current robotic simulators. With MetaSim, you can use any simulator with the same code—bringing together the community’s diverse efforts under one framework! RoboVerse Dataset and Benchmark: We unify popular simulation environments and benchmarks into a single cohesive system and introduce the RoboVerse dataset—a large-scale, high-quality synthetic dataset. Additionally, we propose a standardized benchmark across both imitation learning and reinforcement learning. A cool feature enabled by our unified framework: Hybrid Simulation! You can now integrate physics engines and renderers from different simulators—e.g., using MuJoCo precise physics with Isaac photorealistic rendering. This not only elevates simulation fidelity but also significantly enhances real-world transfer performance across complex robotic applications.
