Our adult clients deadlift until they can do our heaviest kettlebell for 10 reps. ( 40 KG range) We also goblet squat. We never do straight bar deadlifts or barbell squats with adult clients. The key is to understand “how much strength do you need for activities of daily living”

The problem is, it is very easy to do it wrongly or overload it.

let's face it: even as a surgeon, there's no way to avoid "deadlifting" and carrying heavy (and often irregular ) weights in a lifetime- whether that's your own weight, kid, pets, luggage, packages or furniture. So, learning to do it properly from the start is VITAL.

His face does not seems to be a doctor let alone a neurosurgeon. Even if he is, not all doctors are equally clever and up to date. Doctors are human.

I agree from a doctor’s standpoint. Squats and deadlifts bring young adult patients in all the time as they hurt their discs. We aren’t just sitting in gyms waiting for incorrect form.

1. Avoid doing deadlifts WRONG. 2. If you *never* do deadlifts, how do you pick up stuff off the ground? Kid, grandkid, Amazon package, toilet, box of bottled water, bag of softener salt, garbage bag…

Dr here. I did DLs for years until herniating a disc in my 30s warming up w/ only 225lb. I agree that done properly, they are great. Problem is most people cannot do them with proper form and almost nobody can do them with proper form 100% of the time. DLs, even done properly, can expose discs that may have been compromised with other activities. While there certainly are exceptions, most will eventually experience injury with DLs. Do at your own risk.

So many people do deadlifts wrong and/or for ego and hurt themselves.
