Does anybody have any resources for Shoulder Rigging? This looks fine when raising the arms to T Pose level, but raising them overhead always deforms incorrectly. I'm not sure if it's the placement of the shoulder bones, the weight painting or the model! #blender #b3d

I think it's because you're lifting up the upper arm controllers past where they can normally go and not rotating the shoulder control. Arms can only go up to about the t-pose level, This vid helped me understand some general rules for humanoid posing

I did pay for his course a few years back, maybe it's time to revisit to see how he rigs the shoulders!

Though I don't have any resources directly, try lifting your real life arms exactly like this. Your shoulders get in the way and your arms won't bend straight up like that. Try pivoting your characters arms forward and then lifting them up and check deformation in that position

I did that exact thing today, I can see what's happening in real life but just cannot replicate it!

In raising of the arms, a great role plays the clavicle and the scapula. Research "Scapulohumeral Rhythm"

the upper arm does now exceed the angle of the collar bone, you didnt move the shoulder bone high enough to have arms up pose @A4Sculptors is a great resource explains this in more detail

Shoulder rigging has always been the biggest issue for me. The closest I have ever gotten to decent results is here, long ago. I recall having to add several more bones and using constraints to move them (lower fac) based on the position of the arms.

Hi so biomechanically speaking people cannot raise their arms like that, to reach that high the arms have to twist. That's why it looks the way it does.

You can fix these issues with corrective shapes or add extra bones to help keep some of the volume. If this is weight painting alone you are already getting really good deformations.

Yeah this is just weight painting, I'm trying to avoid using corrective shape keys as much as possible, because I feel like they can just mask bad rigging. I want to make it as good as possible and only use them if I need to
