That’s called a soldier brick stack above door or window opening. I never used that tool he is using to level. It’s kinda odd that a steel lentil was not installed over that opening instead they are just using a template to stack the soldier bricks across.

I put a piece of steel across called a lintel.. sits on top of the bricks
