Over the past week, Russia launched nearly 1,550 attack drones against Ukraine, more than 1,260 guided aerial bombs, and two missiles. Over that same week, due to the easing of sanctions, Russia increased its crude oil sales to finance its war. Revenues give Russia a sense of impunity and the ability to continue the war. That is why pressure must continue and sanctions must work. Russia’s shadow fleet must not feel safe in European waters or anywhere else. Tankers that serve the war budget can and must be stopped and blocked, not just let go. I thank every leader who makes such decisions. This is what brings a dignified peace closer.

This week brought us closer to finalizing the 19th sanctions package – we expect its approval soon. We will quickly synchronize the package in Ukraine. Russia’s energy resources are being restricted. The infrastructure of the “shadow fleet” will face new pressure. Cryptocurrency schemes used by Russia to bypass sanctions will also be countered by Europe. I am grateful that many of Ukraine’s proposals have been taken into account in the EU sanctions package. We now expect strong sanctions steps from the United States as well – Europe is doing its part. Everyone can now see Russian interference – against Poland, and yesterday against Estonia. These are not accidental incidents. Russia will continue trying to spread its aggression, destabilization, and interference. This is their system. This must be countered, also systemically, and together. I thank everyone who is helping.

Right now, we are defending ourselves from Russian attacks almost every day. This week alone, there were more than 1,500 strike drones, over 1,280 guided aerial bombs, and 50 missiles of various types. Thousands of foreign components have been found in this weaponry – more than 132,000 items – from many countries: Europe, the United States, China, Japan, and dozens of others. All these technologies help Russia create weapons on a large scale. All for the sake of terror against our people. If Russia is not stopped, this will surely become a threat to the countries of Europe and the Indo-Pacific. Strong sanctions are an instrument that will help stop this. We must cut off all possible supply routes and means of evading sanctions, and exert pressure on the countries and individual companies that aid them. The scale of today’s attack strongly indicates that Russia has no intention of really ending this war. If we take into account that Russia is also helping the Iranian regime to carry out strikes across the region, the conclusion becomes self-evident: without additional and strong pressure on Russia, without significant Russian losses, those in Moscow will not develop any desire to back down from the war and somehow come to terms with peace again. Pressure is clearly lacking right now. On the contrary, there are signals encouraging Russia to continue what they have been doing for years, only increasing their aggressiveness. The fact that sanctions against Russia have been partially eased serves Russia’s interest to continue the war. I am grateful to Canada for its new package of sanctions against more than 160 entities linked to Russia’s shadow fleet. Today, during our meeting with Mark Carney, we discussed strengthening sanctions pressure on Russia. And it is important that such decisions are being made. We also discussed formats of defense cooperation, Canada’s participation in financing the production of Ukrainian drones under the Danish model, and cooperation in the energy sector. Importantly, Canada will continue to provide Ukraine with energy support and assistance in recovery. I thank Mark for his strong position during the G7–Ukraine meeting and for all the support for our people. We truly have strong allies and the Prime Minister’s significant personal engagement in supporting Ukraine. And this is highly valuable.

The key issue is whether our partners can influence Russia to accede to a full ceasefire—a durable silence that would allow us to seek a way out of this war. Russian propagandists continue to threaten not only Ukraine but also other neighbors—Lithuania, the other Baltic states. Most countries, all key leaders, have their attention fixed on what is happening there. And this is truly a good opportunity to achieve real peace in that region after so many victims. And this is a new low in Russian depravity – to intensify terrorist strikes at a moment like this, hitting the very lives of our people. Just last night alone, nearly 500 drones were launched in multiple waves, about 200 of them “shaheds,” also 32 missiles, mostly ballistic ones. Only one response can be given to this: more strength, more air defenses to protect our critical infrastructure, and increased pressure on Russia so that they are truly held accountable for everything they do. Sanctions must be tightened – and we are discussing it with partners – and Russian assets must be fully used to strengthen our defense and ensure recovery.
