Jacob Tierney discusses his process for writing Heated Rivalry and outlining season two: "The book [Heated Rivalry] is in five parts and very quickly I was like, part one, episode one. Part two, episode two. It was very clear to me. …So in this case, I actually did not outline. Because I was just using these parts of this book, and I knew these books so well at this point. Something that I did, and that I'm trying to do again now when I'm writing the new season, is I'm trying to use—Because there's a dreaminess to this show, I try to use my memory as a guide. I'm like, what do I remember? And then I try to give primacy to the stuff that I remember and that has stuck in my brain all these years with this story. So I’m like, oh I have to do that! And that's a nice way for me to kind of center things. Where if I have to do that, then it means maybe I don't have to do this, and it maybe means I want to combine or collapse different things. Because if this is going to take up—If one incident that I'm thinking of is going to take up the space in an episode that I think of as the heart, …then you don't need to do a first version of it in the same way, you know? Little things like that. That being said, for this season because I'm working with a co-writer as well, we have outlined everything. And every time, I do approach outlining like a teenager, where I'm like, [modulates voice] I don't want to. But then when I do it, I'm always like, why don't I always do this? And then I try to feel and visualize what would be my reaction if that person came in to me and quit. If my reaction to that is, 'Yes! I don't want to smile, so I don't want to act like I'm happy about this. Nobody likes firing people. No problem at all, we'll replace them'—that's a C player. That's someone you should get the courage to get off the team right away. On the second category, if my reaction to it is, 'You know, it kind of sucks. I would've preferred that person stayed, but it's not the end of the world. We'll hire a headhunter. We'll get someone as good, maybe someone even better, and things will work out'—that's a B player. But if when I visualize that person quitting, my reaction to that is pure terror and absolute panic, and like somebody took a baseball bat and just whacked me in the stomach and then punched me in the face. I'm going, 'Oh my God! Like I'm never going to find someone as good as her. No way. I'm never going to have someone as talented as that person. Scarlett: I do have to admit that Zeudi and Maria Rosaria have changed my life with the aerosol. I've got to speak the truth. Zeudi: Do you remember when you judged me? Scar: I didn't judge you. Z: Yes, for the sound. Scar: Yeah, because obviously the sound of the aerosol is really loud, and Zeudi says to me that her whole family loves the sound of the aerosol. And when she sent me the YouTube recreation of the sound that they fall asleep to, I was like, "Oh my God, this is so intense. How?" And then when I started using the aerosol, I suddenly was like, I'm actually quite tired because it's quite ASMR, and now I get it. But her mum and her have literally saved my life with this because I have, or had, and I'm ashamed to admit it, an addiction to Sudafed Blue. It was actually quite severe. Five years strong. If I didn't have it on me, I would panic because my nose would get so blocked. Last time I was in Naples, I booked the wrong flight home. Look, happens to the best of us. Don't want to talk about it. It's actually an embarrassment at my age, but here we are. It's not the first time. I'm sure it won't be the last. And so I was panicking though because this is how bad it is. I was bargaining on getting back to the UK by midday because I'd ran out of my Sudafed blue, so I was like, "Right, I've got one spray left before I get to the UK, and then I've got it on speed dial." Because I knew they didn't have it in Italy. So first thing when I missed my flight is not, "Okay, I get to spend more time with my beautiful girlfriend." Sadly, my first thought is, "Shit, the Sudafed. What am I going to do?" So I can feel the panic in me rising. So Zeudi’s like, "Okay, don't worry. We go to my house. My mom will fix this." And I'm thinking, "No disrespect, but what could your mom possibly fix after five years?" And bless Maria Rosaria comes into the room with hot salt in a sock and starts dabbing my face. I'm sat there like, "what is going on?" And then Zeudi comes in with the aerosol kit, and I'm like, "Right, these Italians mean business." And I just surrender. Normally I'd be like, "No," but obviously I know better than to fight not one, but two Italian women, okay? So I'm just sat there like, they could've said, "Look, we're going to amputate your arm," and I would've just said, "Fair enough." And so Zeudi’s mom's dabbing my face with the salt and then holding the aerosol up my nose, and I'm just like... And then lo and behold, after an hour, I can suddenly blow my nose. Guys, I've not been able to blow my nose in four years. Long story short, I'm 11 days clean of Sudafed, all thanks to these two. And now… Zeudi: You can breathe. Scar: I can breathe and I can blow my nose again like a normal person. Five years, guys, five years through the British healthcare system and my two Italians fix it in one day. You should be blaming the head coach. Get that first. I was not the one letting me go one-on-one the whole game until I had 70, and then you started to send a double. At that point, I got 70 with, like, what? nine minutes left to go in the game you think i'm not going for it like like and that's the thing that's crazy when they talk about the unethical part of the basketball i'm like if i have 70 points with 9 minutes to go Who would just be like, you know, coach, just take me out. Yeah, right. Anybody in my shoes with nine minutes left? Okay. A minute? All right. Nine? Yeah, I'm going for it. You can't be mad at that. If you are mad, I don't care because a lot of people, they're upset because if they did play, they never had a chance to get that close to chasing greatness. And then if you get that close to chasing greatness, that's the point of chasing it so you can surpass it. And some of the people have never played basketball. So like if you've been in the backyard and you and a couple of your homies have been playing 21 and you got 19. You're not going to get an easy look off. This was awesome. I got the opportunity to describe to Rick Rubin how I make Founders podcast: “Steph Curry was asked: What do you think of when you're taking a shot? And he said: Absolutely nothing. I’ve had people ask me how I choose what to highlight. What are you thinking of when you're doing this? And my response is: Nothing. I just read and if something jumps out to me I don't think at all, I just underline it. And then I'll go back through and reread all my highlights. And if that part is still interesting, it was interesting the first time, now it's interesting the second time, it's probably interesting to other people. There's 10 million mes out there. I'm not unique. And there's no way that if I read this line twice and found it interesting that if I read it on a podcast that somebody else is not going to think it's interesting too. If I overthink it or if I think of “oh this person might hear it” or “oh this many people will hear it” that gets in the way. I'm thinking of nothing.”

Had some work in LA, and then I came here. But yesterday, I rode a horse for the first time. So it was an unbelievable experience." "But when I was younger, there used to be a horse that was in a field nearby, just a shy horse. And it was this beautiful horse. It was just on its own every day. So I'd go and stop, and it would come over to me, and I'd spend time [with it]. And then when I'd start walking home, I'd start to notice my allergies started kicking off. And then my breathing, I'd struggle to breathe. And I'd really, really struggle. And I didn't know that I had asthma." "Then I was, I happened to be around another horse another time, and I had an asthma attack. And it was a really scary experience, because I didn't have an inhaler or anything. So anyways, I stayed away from horses since that day. That was when I was probably like 14 or something. And I went through this desensitization program, because my allergies were crazy, particularly for hay fever in the UK. And I didn't think anything of it. I hadn't thought about it. And I did a shoot at the beginning of this year with a horse for the Time 100 magazine. And I took medication, antihistamine. But I was able to be around this horse, no problems. So yesterday, I did a shoot with a horse for Plus 44. And I was like, can I ride it? And I got on. And it was just, wow. It was an amazing experience." "The horse started moving. And it started to gallop. And I didn't know what to do in that moment. So I panicked a little bit. But it was beautiful. Lewis: Should I tell them the funny story about us? Charles: Oh, the chess one? So we were in bed. Not in the same bed, but he was in London. I was in Monaco and we were playing chess, okay? And so the last game he wins, and so there's 4-4. And he doesnt want to go to sleep being 4-4 so he's like lets do another game. LH: You can't go to bed at 4-4, we've got to play a game. CL: But I was so tired, and I didn't want to play that game. LH: He's home, I'm on a flight to Japan. So I'm midair, somehow I've got internet. And I managed to be playing him, and it's quick enough so... do you want to say? CL: Go on.. LH: So basically, so we're playing this game, and so this next game, the moves that he's making are so good. I'm like, damn it. What is the next move? (long clip & transcription ‼️) 🎭: if i was asked one year ago if i wanted to perform in Concerto, i would've said no. there was a different kind of event that i was asked if i would like to participate and i actually said no to it. because up until recently like a few months ago, i had extremely bad imposter syndrome. 🎭: i didn't feel like i deserved to stand on stage, i didn't feel like i was ready and i kept doubting myself and was like "there's no way i would be able to perform to people's standards and stuff" so i politely declined being in an event a long time ago. 🎭: this time for Concerto when i was asked to participate, i was thinking of the same thing too but i thought about it a little more. i thought to myself like "if you're not gonna participate now then when are you going to do it? if you keep saying no to all these opportunities, they're all going to slip past." so i keep telling myself, "if you're gonna do it now then when are you going to do it?" 🎭: and i was inspired a little by my recent short covers and dance covers because ive been planning to release them for quite a long time actually. just the thought of that made me think, "i'm trying to work so hard on these other things so why don't i just try to do this as well?" 🎭: so i finally decided that i'm going to try this time to step up on stage and i want to be the proof to everyone that works hard that if you work hard eventually something good will come your way 🎭: i want everyone to be able to look at me and be like, "if he can work hard and do what he wants to do, then i can do it too." i think that's one of the biggest reasons i decided to participate and stand on this stage is because i want to inspire people because i came from nothing 🎭: i had no singing experience, no dancing experience, no japanese experience. when i first joined, i didn't even know how to read hiragana very well. i didn't even know wtf katakana was 🎭: i'm always thankful for the love and support everyone gives me. if it wasn't for you guys, i would really have said no so thank you. i really owe everything to all of you that always around and always supporting #knoxclips thank you for not giving up!!!! 😭🧡

(long clip & transcription ‼️) 🎭: if i was asked one year ago if i wanted to perform in Concerto, i would've said no. there was a different kind of event that i was asked if i would like to participate and i actually said no to it. because up until recently like a few months ago, i had extremely bad imposter syndrome. 🎭: i didn't feel like i deserved to stand on stage, i didn't feel like i was ready and i kept doubting myself and was like "there's no way i would be able to perform to people's standards and stuff" so i politely declined being in an event a long time ago. 🎭: this time for Concerto when i was asked to participate, i was thinking of the same thing too but i thought about it a little more. i thought to myself like "if you're not gonna participate now then when are you going to do it? if you keep saying no to all these opportunities, they're all going to slip past." so i keep telling myself, "if you're gonna do it now then when are you going to do it?" 🎭: and i was inspired a little by my recent short covers and dance covers because ive been planning to release them for quite a long time actually. just the thought of that made me think, "i'm trying to work so hard on these other things so why don't i just try to do this as well?" 🎭: so i finally decided that i'm going to try this time to step up on stage and i want to be the proof to everyone that works hard that if you work hard eventually something good will come your way 🎭: i want everyone to be able to look at me and be like, "if he can work hard and do what he wants to do, then i can do it too." i think that's one of the biggest reasons i decided to participate and stand on this stage is because i want to inspire people because i came from nothing 🎭: i had no singing experience, no dancing experience, no japanese experience. when i first joined, i didn't even know how to read hiragana very well. i didn't even know wtf katakana was 🎭: i'm always thankful for the love and support everyone gives me. if it wasn't for you guys, i would really have said no so thank you. i really owe everything to all of you that always around and always supporting #knoxclips thank you for not giving up!!!! 😭🧡
