Brazil took nearly 55 years to move from E5 to E20, while Japan is still at E3 and plans to reach E20 only by 2040. The USA remains at E10. Why did these countries take so long? Because a transition to higher ethanol blending requires time to: ➤ Upgrade petrol pumps and storage infrastructure ➤ Upgrade fuel transportation systems ➤ Develop and test E20-compatible engines The world took decades to prepare for higher ethanol blends. First, consumers should have a choice at petrol pumps... those who want E20 fuel should be able to buy E20, while those who prefer pure petrol should have the option to purchase pure petrol. THE E20 DEBATE: FACTS VS HYPOCRISY. HERE'S AN UNDENIABLE FACT: The E20 programme did not begin under the Modi government. Ethanol blending was approved years earlier, during the UPA. The difference is in execution. Blending remained stuck at roughly 1–1.5% for years before accelerating significantly under the NDA. So, let's first get the politics out of the way. If ethanol blending was acceptable in principle then, why is it suddenly portrayed as anti-people now? Now, let's look at the arguments being presented by critics: CRITICS ARGUMENT 1: E20 FUEL IS BEING PUSHED BY NDA TO KEEP SUGAR CANE FARMERS HAPPY. There's no doubt Ethanol is creating an additional income stream for sugarcane farmers. But governments have always handed out subsidies or incentives to farmers. + MSP exists for 23 crops. Sugar cane farmers get SAP or State Advised Price. + Fertiliser subsidies. + Cheap or free electricity. + Irrigation subsidies. + Procurement policies. If these benefits to farmers are accepted as legitimate public policy, why is E20 policy being targeted in isolation for market distortion? CRITICS ARGUMENT 2: ETHANOL PRODUCTION IS WATER CONSUMING. Yes, sugarcane consumes a great deal of water. But so do + Paddy cultivators. Just look at the tumbling water tables in Punjab, Haryana. + AI and data centers. + Semiconductor manufacturing. + Steel and cement production. The question is not whether something uses water, but whether the benefits justify the costs. Again why are critics holding E20 alone to a test that they don't set for others? CRITICS ARGUMENT 3: THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD NOT MAKE E20 MANDATORY. LEAVE IT TO CHOICE. We're in a democracy and choice matters. But governments routinely make decisions that we, the people have no choice but to accept. + Taxation rates + Emission norms. + Fuel quality standards. + Safety regulations. + Identity Proof. These are often choices imposed to achieve broader national goals. Shouldn't E20 should be judged in the same way? Here's how E20 usage serves NATIONAL INTEREST: + India imports 85–90% of its crude oil. E20 seeks to address that by replacing up to 20% of petrol volume with domestically produced ethanol, helping diversify the fuel mix and reducing import costs. + With E20 NDA estimates saving Rs 1 lakh crore in foreign-exchange. CRITICS ARGUMENT 4: COST OF CAR ENGINE WEAR AND TEAR, MILEAGE INEFFICIENCY OUTWEIGHS BENEFITS. It is true that Ethanol has about 34% less energy per litre than petrol. But because E20 contains only 20% ethanol, the overall energy content of the fuel falls by roughly 4%–7%. So at 5% a car that gives 20 km/L on pure petrol will give 19km/L. But usage also improves air quality. Which increases longevity in humans and lowers healthcare costs over time. That is s fair trade-off. CONCLUSION: Every policy is a trade off. E20 isn't perfect. But if agricultural subsidies, procurement, irrigation policy and fuel regulations are accepted as legitimate public policy, then judge ethanol using the same yardstick.

The Hon'ble ex CM of Delhi is misleading citizens of GOA. The state government has no power to ban Ethanol 20 blended petrol. If the state govt has the power, as he claims, his government should ban E20 in Punjab in 5 days! I will shave off my hair! Also I hope the Hon'ble ex CM does supports putting fuel under GST or reducing state taxes so rates come down. While both the government & opposition do drama in parliament and waste our money, these same people party together at night at the function of the biggest Sugar Emperor in the country. The Sugar Lobby is that powerful !! Meanwhile you pay more for Sugar, INDIA does not benefit as Sugar Exports are now banned & farmers continue to languish in poverty as they don't reap the benefits of the spike in Sugar prices. We value that! *We are not against E20 Petrol, what we want is E-10 Petrol for E10-compatible vehicles. These constitute 80-90% of the vehicles on Indian roads today. *Let the government introduce E25, E30, E100, E200 or flying buses of they can, please first make the 360° infrastructure for the same. *As so far as Forex is concerned, by giving E-10, we would reduce Ethanol consumption for vehicles & can use the same for industries like yours (industrial Ethanol and save foreign reserves that we use importing Ethanol from the US. *Corn that has been diverted towards Ethanol means, we now have to import DDGS a by-product of corn, which we would earlier export and earn foreign currency! E20 fuel began to be supplied fully from October–November 2025, and from 1 April 2026 the government made it mandatory for private players and all oil companies to sell only E20. Since the notification, some people have raised psychological concerns, often posting on social media without evidence. At our own petrol pumps, none of the customers’ vehicles has shown any problems with E20. Those posting online also have no proof that E20 damages engines. Yes, three institutions produced reports on the long-term effects of E20, suggesting that older vehicles might experience problems, particularly on rubber parts. #WATCH | Delhi: On the rise in sugar prices, Niraj Shirgaokar, President of the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), says, "The government has already taken some very good steps in the last 4 to 6 weeks. They have done physical verification of stocks in the sugar mills. They have also put limits on the trading community. They have put limits on institutional buyers and bulk consumers. We are also seeing certain other tightening steps happening. The import of sugar is another important step that has been announced. There is no shortage of sugar. Sugar is available, like we showed in our numbers, and we have to make sure that these steps will definitely help in a very smooth transition into the festival season and into a new sugar crushing season... He also says, "We have asked the government to reduce the holding limit from 400 tons to 200 tons for the traders so that more sugar is released into the market and then the consumer sees the actual correction in the prices during the festivals here..." On the import of sugar, he says, "The import of sugar is a measure of protection. We don't have like 70-80 lakh tons of stock. We have 35 lakh tons of closing stock, which is a comfortable number going into November. The government does feel that this particular figure of 8 or 10 lakh tons will make it absolutely comfortable for the consumer..."

The automobile manufacturers, as well as the people who service these vehicles, all say there is no difficulty. Why this sudden interest? We have been using E15 (blend of 15% ethanol and 80% petrol) for the last three and a half years. We have been on E20 (blend of 20% ethanol and 80% petrol) since April of last year. If someone is suggesting E25 (blend of 25% ethanol and 80% petrol), we have made it clear that we are conducting tests. Those tests will take time. They stated that E20 is a very dangerous fuel and using it in petrol-based vehicles manufactured before 2023 would be extremely hazardous for the vehicles.
