The irony is hard to miss. The Congress-led UPA government had fixed the price for oil companies to procure ethanol for blending with petrol at ₹27 per litre in 2010, years before the BJP came to power. The decision was part of the Ethanol Blended Petrol programme. Ethanol blending was clearly a “dream” of the UPA. The problem? Like so many of their other “dreams”, they implemented very little. Now, after the Modi government has actually taken ethanol blending from a policy aspiration to a nationwide reality, they want to claim credit and blame the BJP for a policy they themselves initiated. You cannot have it both ways.

#WATCH | The Petroleum Dealers Association has urged the Centre to reconsider the rollout of E20 (20% ethanol-blended petrol), claiming the fuel is causing operational and customer-related challenges at fuel stations. Association President Sasanka Sekhar Sahu said many vehicles on Indian roads, including several BS6 models, were not originally designed for a 20% ethanol blend. I used to admire Nitin Gadkari’s work a lot, but his relentless push for ethanol over the past few months is getting out of hand. Back in 2003 and 2006, the roadmap was clear and calculated, a steady 5% ethanol blending across states when vehicles were properly E5 compliant. That's how policy implementation should look. Instead, we're seeing an aggressive all-India push for E20, and now he is actively pushing for E85 and E100. What’s even more baffling is his response when asked why India isn't adopting a true choice-based model like Brazil. He completely passed the buck, stating that providing fuel options is Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri’s job, while simultaneously boasting that flex-fuel vehicles will give consumers the ultimate choice between ₹70/L ethanol and ₹120/L petrol. Btw he promised ₹15/L ethanol blended petrol back in 2023. If the fundamental policy decisions and market readiness fall under a different ministry, why force a aggressive narrative onto the automotive sector before the infrastructure or consumer choice is genuinely ready?

Did a simple ethanol check myself yesterday! Watch it till the end! Took 170 mL of E20 petrol, added 20 mL of water, shook it well, and after the layers separated, the water/ethanol layer measured 40 mL. That suggests roughly 20 mL of ethanol in 170 mL of fuel around 11.8% ethanol (roughly E12), not E20. If my calculations are correct, then I have a genuine question: has the ethanol content quietly been reduced from E20 to E12 temporarily because of a widespread backlash? or is there another explanation for these results? Either way, this also shows how readily ethanol attracts water and what moisture inside a fuel tank can potentially do over time. Happy to be corrected if my calculations or the test method are wrong!! ☺️

We have been using E15 (blend of 15% ethanol and 80% petrol) for the last three and a half years. We have been on E20 (blend of 20% ethanol and 80% petrol) since April of last year. From April 2025 to April 2026, it has already been one year, and we are now another five months beyond that. If someone is suggesting E25 (blend of 25% ethanol and 80% petrol), we have made it clear that we are conducting tests. Those tests will take time.
