This is 100% why I love The Last Jedi. At the time it came out I was 41 years old. Had been going through some of the hardest years of my life. And Rian Johnson's version of Luke Skywalker spoke to what I was experiencing. The Hero's Journey isn't just a coming of age mythological framework. It continues on into later phases of the human experience. The Luke Skywalker in The Last Jedi speaks to that.

I really like how, in this moment from The Book Of Boba Fett, Luke Skywalker actually gave Grogu a fair choice as to whether or not he wanted to continue training to be a Jedi or return to Din Djarin. It’s a great progression from the Jedi Order that we see in earlier stories set within the Prequel Era, and really says a lot about how Luke wanted to teach the next generation of Jedi.

This deleted scene from The Last Jedi where Luke gives Rey one final lesson is so great, that I genuinely cannot believe that it didn’t actually end up in the final film. The scene ending with Rey telling Luke that she “believes in that old legend of Luke Skywalker that he hates so much” only makes this moment hit even harder.

I don’t like this movie, but I will say that this is Luke Skywalker at his greatest. This may be the greatest portrayal of a Jedi on screen. Using the Force for knowledge and defense, saving lives without violence and selflessly sacrificing himself to the Cosmic Force.

I’ve always appreciated how The Clone Wars provided some brief, visual insight into how Sith actually train their apprentices, as well as how they essentially warp the views and teachings of The Jedi. Dooku’s training with Savage in this moment is the complete antithesis of how Yoda trains Luke to lift rocks on Dagobah years later.

Rewatching The Last Jedi, and this scene is so much better/interesting with the idea that Palpatine is speaking through Snoke. It makes sense too. All the talk of wanting a new Vader, his obsession with Luke, and the way he’s clearly manipulating Kylo. It all reeks of Palpatine.
