Dear @MarioNawfal It is time to put an end to lies and manipulation. @PaulKagame claims that other actors are responsible for the crises in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, but it is crucial to remind everyone that he is identified as the main perpetrator of the atrocities taking place in our territory. The massacres, the rapes of our women and children, as well as the abduction of children for unknown destinations, are crimes that bear his mark. His regime has systematically pillaged our strategic mineral resources, thereby enriching his country at the expense of the Congolese people. If he knows of other individuals or groups who might be hidden behind this violence, it is his moral duty to denounce them. But the truth is that he is the one holding the reins and directing this tragedy. The Congolese people suffer in silence while he continues to fuel this cycle of violence. The international community must open its eyes to the reality of the situation in the DRC and understand that it is time to hold accountable those responsible. But this lame excuse is a calculated deception: Rwanda isn’t merely a transit point, it’s one of the biggest profiteers from Congo’s suffering. Despite having almost no mineral reserves of its own, Rwanda has become one of the world's leading exporters of coltan and gold, all of which are overwhemingly mined in the DRC. Moreover, the UN has pointed the finger at Rwanda, saying there is strong evidence it’s backing the atrocities-committing M23, and has sent up to 4,000 of its own soldiers over the border to assist the rebels in their deadly mine-grabbing rampage. So while Kagame might be right that the buyers of plundered Congolese wealth are guilty of fanning the war, his shameless attempt to pass the buck ignores the fact that Rwanda is a central player in this blood-stained supply chain. In the last month alone, Rwanda-backed M23 rebels have seized multiple towns, displacing over 500,000 people and tightening their grip on the DRC's mineral-rich east. For years, Kinshasa has accused Kigali of providing financial, political and military support to M23, accusations backed by mounting evidence from the United Nations, human rights organisations and intelligence reports. Yet, Rwandan President Paul Kagame has always denied involvement, skillfully masking US and European imperialist aggression behind Pan-Africanist rhetoric. However, PLO Lumumba, one of Africa's most revered Pan-Africanist scholars, calls himself a ‘friend’ of Kagame. How do we reconcile Pan-Africanism with friendship with a man accused of destabilising an African state on behalf of imperial powers? This question took centre stage during the ‘Pan-African Attitude’ podcast’s eighth episode at African Stream’s Nairobi studios. The story about the “looter” of the Congo’s minerals gets one thing wrong: the identity of the looter. The Financial Times ran a story yesterday about the Congo that tells us two things: First, the Congo is still, in many ways, a Belgian colony. Second, unlike Rwanda, the Congo has yet to take meaningful steps to free itself from colonial control, even though it has the means to do so. So, what’s this all about? FT reports a growing dispute over millions of colonial-era geological records held at Belgium’s Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren. These records include detailed maps of Congo’s mineral wealth from the colonial period—data that is extremely valuable today, given the country’s copper, cobalt, and lithium reserves. Kinshasa, together with US mining company KoBold Metals (backed by Bill Gates), agreed to digitise these records to better identify and exploit the resources. BUT Belgium said no. Instead, it launched its own EU-funded digitisation project, promising that the Congo will *eventually* gain access. At its heart, this story is about control. Whoever controls the data shapes investment, profits, and, yes, dependency. The FT frames it as a geopolitical and economic standoff between Belgium, the DRC, and a US-linked firm. But for ordinary Congolese, it’s another reminder that even knowledge about their own land is still being negotiated elsewhere. What’s perhaps more striking is the contrast with Rwanda. The small neighbour, often dismissed for having NO minerals, is in the process of finalising a national digital database of all its mineral wealth. Rwanda’s Mining Board has already begun deploying a system designed to give investors and regulators transparent, online access to mining licences and geological data. Meanwhile, the “giant” Congo is still effectively begging colonial powers for access to its own information. As we’ve said, the West does not need Rwanda to access the Congo’s minerals. That only becomes clear when westerners start squabbling over who controls the information about the Congo’s wealth.
