EXTREMELY COMMON training MISTAKE: Redundant Exercise Selection I saw this type of stuff all the time in people’s programming…. - Flat Barbell Bench Press & Flat Chest Press Machine in the SAME SESSION - Wide Grip Lat Pull-Down & Wide Grip Pull-Ups in the SAME SESSION - Hack Squats...

No wonder I’m so tired… I’ve been doing everything twice.

Dean, this is a great way to educate. You should post more like this because I often see guys doing multiple separate exercises that hit the same muscle. There’s a lot of confusion out there 💪

Completely agree, no need to do excess volume

Dean. Had a question - you mention How many exercises do you per muscle group per session for Example a generic split of a push day Say machine press and isolation is that all you need for a muscle group two exercises?

LeRoosterd's profile picture

So one compound + one / two isolations is good for a muscle group?

Dean Turner's profile picture
Dean Turner6 days ago

It is kind of muscle group dependent and depends on the program There are a number of specific pairs that work great Ex: leg extensions + squat pattern Ex 2: pec fly + incline press

I guess my question is when you say hit the muscle differently are you saying you can do two compounds in a session that are similar Flat press Incline press or Shoulder press? Or would you leave it at one compound?

They probably watched too many Charles Glass videos or something and think it stimulates the muscle differently using different implements even if the movement is the exact same lol

There’s still so much bad advice out there 🤦🏻‍♂️

Thinking about joint actions over exercises will fix this

Most won’t

In their defense, the bench had a line and the chest press machine was free. That's not programming, that's gym traffic 😂

Hi Dean, Is supine press machine as good as flat bench press machine ? or is it better ?

Dean Turner's profile picture
Dean Turner6 days ago

You’re asking about supine vs seated? If so, it depends on the build of the machine basically

Not the seated, flat bench press machine vs Supine

Dean Turner's profile picture
Dean Turner6 days ago

They’re literally the same thing Supine means lying on your back Flat bench press machine would be the same thing

Noticed you were wearing knee sleeves on the leg press but not on the hack squat. Any preference there?

This is a big one. Most people I coach get more from one hard bench variation with 3 to 4 sets close to failure than from three chest machines at half effort. Pick one, add reps, then add weight.

I fear I may be doing this. I do a chest press machine, that seems to incline upwards - but only a little. I also do flat barbell smith machine bench press. How do I know if my chest press is flat or not incline enough?

Would single leg press be OK after hack squat?

I do the lat pulldown and assisted pull ups on upper days. I guess I can cut one of them out.

They are indeed pretty redundant if you’re referring to the wide grip version of both
