The painful last journey home as ambulances carrying the bodies of Malawi’s Vice President Dr. Saulos Chilima, former First Lady Shanil Muluzi, and eight others killed with them in a military aircraft in Mzuzu line up at a local aerodrome in Raiply where their bodies will be flown from to Lilongwe. Here is a summary account by one person who was at the crash site. “1. The search team(s) was/were at Raiply, waiting for instructions. 2. A local Councillor got a call from a timber maker/sawyer (soyala wa matabwa) from the Nthungwa area of Chikangawa asking about the story he was hearing about a missing plane. 3. The timberman then alerted the Councillor that in fact they had seen something that looked like a wreckage of a plane in the area. 4. The Councillor then alerted the Police. 5. The Police informed the search part(ies) at Raiply. 6. The search team then started off heading for Nthungwa. 7. Upon arrival some people started taking pictures and circulating them. 8. The Malawi Defence Force personnel then ordered them to stop taking pictures and to clear from the site. By this time groups of civilians had already reached and viewed the site. 9. Dr. Chilima's body and two other bodies were lying outside the plane. Some five or so bodies were in the front side inside the plane, and three were in the backside inside the plane. 10. The front part of the plane was the most damaged, with the rear part looking a bit intact. 11. The bodies have now been taken out of the plane and laid outside at a short distance from the wreckage waiting for their removal by ambulances. 12. Nthungwa is slightly outside the pine plantation, covered with natural forest.”

The single-engine Cessna crashed into an autoparts store parking lot and struck high voltage powerlines on the way down, causing the plane to flip upside down. We all saw it – the entire village. It circled overhead, flames clearly visible, and then after a few moments, it crashed. There was a massive explosion, like fireworks going off. It fell directly into the fields of Akalian Kalan and Akalian Khurd, with a huge blast following the crash. People from nearby came running, but the fire was too intense to approach. The army arrived later and secured the area. No one knows yet if the pilot survived or not. We just saw the flames and the explosion. It was a terrifying sight. We didn’t see any pilot around the wreckage, and no one was rescued. The fire was eventually put out by fire trucks, and the military arrived to secure the area.
