#Factcheck There are commercially operating small modular reactors chris bowen. They rely on proven and trusted technology from larger reactors which have provided clean, reliable power for decades. ✍️Sign our petition:

Politicians in general shouldn't be trusted to lead this nuclear debate. Experts like Jasmin have the knowledge and importantly the nuclear experience that we need to lean on. In addition to this omission from Chris Bowen today, Dutton also falsely claimed in his post that the "top 20 economies in the world" are moving "towards adopting the latest nuclear power technologies" when Germany has just abandoned their capacity and Italy don't have any either.

@Bowenchris I think politicians should have a "three strikes and you are out" rule. If Dutton lies two more times in this parliament, he should be banned from ever sitting as a member again and docked his superannuation.

@Bowenchris There is no commercially operating SMR in any western country. Only in Russia and China and no one knows the extent of their build cost or operating cost. The only one being built in the West, in the US was shut down because of cost overruns. Next BS support point please Will?

@Bowenchris “Industry experts say SMRs are not commercially available, that nuclear energy is more expensive than alternatives and in a best-case scenario could not play a role in Australia for more than a decade, and probably not before 2040.” Some proof of your claim will help Will.

@Bowenchris It’s not completed in China. So it’s not a functioning SMR yet. Hasn’t this been under construction since 2010 and still not operational? It won’t be operational till 2026.

@Bowenchris As simon hac says. The key words are commercially available SMR's which won't be developed for years, maybe decades. But we can install GWs of renewables and storage tomorrow that are commercially available and viable. We are on the clock here. This is a global heating emergency

@Bowenchris Nope, and I encourage everyone else to not sign it either. I am a fan of nuclear power (thorium molten-salt) but there is no need for it here as we have the perfect country for renewable power. And nuclear power is the most expensive form of power generation anyway.

@Bowenchris There is nothing stopping ANYONE doing business case to prove your point. If it stacks up the law can be changed, but no one other than you& the LNP think it's at all practical. And where is the photo of a modular unit operating now. Not an AI generated impression, a real one
