Here, he talks about the importance of knowing Black culture when making films about Black people. He was giving an interview while promoting his award-winning movie Fences. It focuses on a working-class African in America who raises a family in the 1950s. Making such films work, says Denzel, is about knowing what it feels to be Black. Denzel Washington isn’t an awards contender for Highest 2 Lowest but that doesn’t change the fact that I really enjoyed this film & Denzel’s performance. Denzel turned 71 last week, but this was a sneaky-physical role from Washington, who’s asked to do a lot. I like this film.

Ethan Hawke is unbelievable in Training Day & I still believe he deserved to win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. It wouldn’t matter how great Denzel was in this film- Training Day does not work without Hawke’s brilliance. He is the glue that holds this film together.

I didn’t initially love The Book of Eli when I first saw it in theaters, but after a few rewatches, I’ve really grown to appreciate Denzel Washington’s performance in this film. You start to see why Denzel took this role after multiple viewings. Gary Oldman is also fantastic here

Denzel Washington’s performance in Flight would’ve probably won him an #Oscar in any other year but 2013, where he ran into Daniel Day-Lewis who won for Lincoln. It’s hard to say whether Denzel deserved this over DDL but this is truly one of Washington’s best performances ever.

Bottle Rocket was the film that started it all for Wes Anderson, which he co-wrote with Owen Wilson back in 1996. I’m not sure Owen has ever done anything better than this film- which is saying a lot considering his career is filled with quality films. This started everything.

Terry Crews, who appears in the scene, has said he was so captivated watching Denzel that he was barely thinking about acting himself. He was simply watching a master at work. You can feel it in the finished film. One actor delivered an all-time performance, and everyone else in the scene was along for the ride.
