In Maheshtala, fourteen people were living with failing eyesight not because treatment was impossible, but because access was. Cataract blindness creeps in slowly, first as discomfort, then as dependence,... until everyday life itself becomes a struggle. For many, hospitals feel distant, procedures intimidating, and costs paralysing. Vision loss, in such cases, becomes silently accepted as fate. Sebaashray exists to interrupt that resignation. The patient's were taken to Renuka Eye Hospital, where cataract surgeries were carried out with precision and care. Fourteen surgeries may not make headlines. From a routine check-up at the Sebaashray camp to specialised care beyond it, Aarti Bera’s journey reflects what this initiative truly stands for. Identified at the Nandigram Block 2 camp as requiring advanced treatment, she was carefully referred and has now successfully undergone laser surgery for her eyes, completely free of cost. From the camps in Nandigram Block 1 and Block 2, several others who needed further eye care were supported every step of the way. Six residents from Block 1 and eight from Block 2 have since completed cataract surgeries at Kalyani Eye Care, without bearing any financial burden. When I see citizens regain their vision and return to their daily lives with confidence, it reminds me why we continue this work.

As these 22 individuals return home with renewed sight, they carry with them more than medical relief. They carry reassurance that governance can be humane, that institutions can care, and that when the state chooses to serve, lives are transformed in the most meaningful ways. Across Diamond Harbour, the camps moved forward as one coordinated effort, guided by a simple responsibility, to ensure that people could access healthcare without confusion, without pressure, and without being made to feel small. From consultations and diagnostics to medicines and referrals, the work remained focused on continuity, so that once someone stepped in for care, they were not left to fend for themselves. Yesterday in Metiaburuz, I spent time with families who came carrying worries they had lived with for far too long. I listened to their concerns, met the doctors and teams on the ground, and saw first-hand how much reassurance timely, respectful care can bring. What stood out was the dignity with which people were able to seek help, without fear of cost, delay, or uncertainty. The trust and affection shown by the people throughout these days have been deeply humbling. But this moment is not a full stop. It is a reminder of what responsible governance must continue to look like. Sebaashray may pause here, but the commitment it represents will carry forward, in every space where care is needed and dignity must be protected. As long as people place their faith in us, our responsibility to stand beside them does not end, it only deepens.
