For those wondering Kingdom Hearts Coded runs at 15fps by default. Increasing beyond will just break the game due to everything being tied to the FPS. In which case my hardware renderer took it from maybe 4-5 fps to a 15 fps cap. This is pretty normal for mobile... show more

Another day, another odd and old-school technical issue in #Nioh3. This game doesn’t just expect the frame rate to hit its FPS cap to work properly, it also wants the FPS to line up with the display refresh rate. Using the 60 fps cap at 120Hz (or higher) can result in lots of frame-time spikes and microstuttering. the only way to avoid this is to switch the refresh rate to 60 Hz, which gives a much smoother frame time graph. Frame Generation on top of a 60 FPS base at 120 Hz works flawlessly without any frame time issues.

When I saw that Assassin's Creed Unity was getting a 60 FPS update for current gen consoles, I honestly could not wait to see it with my own eyes. And after playing it, I realized it is not just 60 FPS. The game also seems to be upscaled to 4K, which is absolutely insane in my opinion and the game runs incredibly smooth! Many of you know that I have never been the biggest fan of Unity. But I have to admit, maybe it is just placebo, yet it genuinely feels like the game plays better. Almost like the controller responds more precisely to what I actually want to do. I tested it properly in stealth and of course in parkour, and I have to say, it feels amazing! For PC players this might not be anything special. But for someone like me, mainly playing on console, finally being able to experience Assassin’s Creed Unity at 60 FPS is a game changer. And by the way, co op also seems to be working normally again. This is honestly crazy to see!

Skate 3 has been 100% recompiled for PC. It's reached it's 2.0 update which introduces a fully native renderer enabling 2x+ the FPS at 1/4 the GPU power, and Apple Silicon went from 25 to 250 FPS at 4K. Originally starting with rexglue, progression has advanced far enough to fully abandon its reliance on emulation via xenia for GPU rendering. This is proof of what's possible, there is plenty to be excited for! Go try it out!!

Later this spring, CloudXR 6.0 for visionOS will bring stereoscopic PC streaming to Vision Pro at up to 4K 120 FPS with foveated streaming. Just arrived at GTC and excited to see what else NVIDIA has in store.

And if that wasn't enough, they gave us Quake in 1996. If there was ever a studio to not just create a genre but then to also dominate it for years and years, the vote would have to go to id Software, no? Sierra for adventures. MicroProse for simulations. id Software for FPS. Blizzard (or Westwood?) for RTS.

In my previous post about the #Nioh3 demo, I mentioned that when the game isn’t consistently holding 60 FPS or 120 FPS, several issues can show up. Here’s a clearer breakdown of what's going on. The main reason is that the game speed and physics are tied to the frame rate. When you enable the 120 FPS cap, the engine start overreacting and pushes CPU usage very high, even if the game is still running at around 60 FPS (as shown in the first example). In the second clip, you can see the uneven, jittery camera movement I mentioned before. Notice how much smoother 60 FPS and 120 FPS look compared to the unlocked side. Also, camera movement at 60 FPS is slightly faster than at 120 FPS. In the third clip, player movement is slower when the frame rate is unlocked. This doesn’t happen all the time, but it shows up often enough to be noticeable. Because of how the Katana Engine behaves, the game is clearly designed around 60 FPS. Running at 120 FPS is possible, but it’s only recommended if your system can maintain that target almost all the time, which isn’t easy to achieve. There’s also an alternative workaround where you select the 60 (locked) option and enable Frame Generation (DLSS or FSR 3), as shown in the last clip. The downside is that DLSS Frame Generation tends to show the same stuttery look as when the frame rate isn’t holding a fixed target, likely due to Reflex keeping the frame rate slightly below target. FSR Frame Generation, on the other hand, looks much smoother and works better here.

Because this has gotten some recent attention again. Apex Legends has bugged FPS ranges, like 140-160FPS for example, where you are severely magnetized to the floor when trying to Slidehop. This Issue has existed for it's entire Lifetime and has been raised to Respawn multiple times. That this still hasn't been addressed in a self proclaimed Movement shooter is completely unbelievable. So i'm once again calling public attention to it in yet another attempt to get this actually looked at. If you regularly reach the following FPS Ranges you HAVE TO Cap your FPS below them to prevent this magnetization issue. - 65-85FPS - 140-160FPS - 205-230FPS - 275-300FPS Even very shallow inclines extend these ranges even further. If you regularly reach FPS in these ranges use the +fps_max command to cap your FPS below one of these ranges. For example “+fps_max 270”. To be safe around inclines set your fps cap 5-10FPS below these ranges. I can guarantee you there will be people under this post utterly flabbergasted that this was the issue all along for why their movement felt so much shittier compared to the smooth movement of the Content creators they watch.

Crazy how Action Quake 2 and The Specialists still inspire a lot of FPS games. I grew up with those. I still don't know what the subgenre is called, there's so little FPS games in that category, I doubt there is even a name for them I need to make a list

The early days of FPS games were pure, wonderful mayhem. Heretic is a brilliant Doom clone, developed by Raven Software and published by id Software in 1994. And while it was a very obvious clone and jumping on the bandwagon of FPS frenzy during that era, it took the fast-paced corridor-shooting formula of Doom and also added some technical and gameplay innovations: 1) While Most FPS games had either a sci/fi or military setting, Heretic was set in a gothic medieval world. 2) It allowed you to look up and down, which was a major technical step forward. Doom locked your view horizontally, while Heretic added vertical aiming. 3) Inventory system: One of the first FPS games to let you pick up items and store them for later use (instead of activating them immediately). Standard in today's games, pretty innovative back in 1994. So yes, it was a clone, but also much more than just that.
