Former Meta Engineer: Quantum Computing and Miners Are Bitcoin’s Two Ticking Time Bombs A former Meta engineer TechLead says Bitcoin faces two ticking time bombs that have yet to be defused: quantum computing and the future of miner incentives. Quantum advances could one day threaten Bitcoin wallet security, while...

@techleadhd Bro, quantum FUD is old news. Mining incentives will sort themselves out. Bitcoin is fine.

Quantum computing first will break your checking and savings bank accounts, then your stocks and bonds and then maybe, just maybe your crypto wallet. Breaking bitcoin code is impossible as it has tens of thousands of nodes all over the world. Quantum computing threats for this and that is just the latest fad.

@techleadhd quantum threat is overblown for at least a decade, the miner incentive one is real and nobody wants to model it. when subsidy drops below 1 btc the security spend per dollar of tx value inverts hard. 2032-36 is the actual stress test

Interesting points, especially around long-term security. Bitcoin's biggest challenges may not come from price cycles but from questions about how the network evolves over decades. Quantum resistance and miner incentives are both issues that need solutions before they become urgent problems. The debate is less about whether Bitcoin works today, and more about whether it can keep working in the future.

@techleadhd Ticking bombs? Just scheduled upgrades. Hash rate keeps hitting ATHs while L2s and ordinals build real fee demand. Miners follow profit. Same narrative since 2013.

@techleadhd Quantum is a soft target—PQC upgrades can be hard-forked in. But miner incentives? That's the real game. We've seen Ordinals/Runes spike fees above block rewards. Will L2s and native yield (like Babylon) save miners, or do we need a fee revolution? 🧀

Quantum's the overhyped half, decades out and soft-forkable, and the real exposure is reused addresses, not the protocol. The fee market is the genuine question, but 'ticking bomb' is still the wrong frame. Security doesn't collapse when the subsidy falls, it re-prices. Hashrate adjusts down to whatever fees support and difficulty follows, so Bitcoin doesn't break, it settles at a new security level. The open question isn't whether it survives, it's how much security fees alone can buy. That's an economics problem, not a countdown.

@techleadhd These are separate risks with different timelines. Quantum mainly threatens exposed public keys and can be mitigated via migration to post-quantum signatures if acted on early. The harder question is whether Bitcoin can sustain enough fee revenue decades after subsidies fade.

BITCOIN RAILS EPISODE #18: MAKE BITCOIN QUANTUM RESISTANT | with BIP360 author Hunter Beast Hunter Beast 🕯️ Quantum computing is a complicated topic—one that incites equal amounts of fear and skepticism depending on who you talk to… especially in Bitcoin. In this episode, BIP360 author Hunter Beast wisely shares why the “truth is likely somewhere in the middle,” citing incremental advancements in quantum computing that may eventually pose a legitimate threat to some Bitcoin addresses—as well as steps we can take to protect ourselves in the short, medium and long term. The correct posture is to “be prepared, not scared,” says Hunter Beast 🕯️ Ultimately, the introduction of quantum resistant cryptography—via proposals like BIP360—will be needed for higher degrees of security. That said, individuals can mitigate personal risk substantially through proper address-use hygiene. This episode breaks down the specific challenges Bitcoin will face in the event of a quantum attack, the likelihood of an attack over time, and the steps we’ll need to take at the individual and communal level to ensure Bitcoin’s safety. This episode includes detailed discussion of: 1) How quantum computing could potentially affect Bitcoin public/private key cryptography—and technologies built on vulnerable addresses (e.g. Taproot) 2) Best practices for protecting yourself against quantum in the short and long term 3) Implications of vulnerable address types—e.g. what about Satoshi’s coins? 4) Deep Dive into BIP360 + proposed long-term solutions 5) Industry roadmaps for quantum computing + how banks and governments are preparing for “Q Day” As always, this episode can be viewed on Spotify or YouTuve—full episode in the comments or linktree in my bio. QUANTUM COMPUTING COULD UNLEASH THE MOST POWERFUL AI EVER BUILT. BUT WHO REALLY CONTROLS IT? The Pentagon has invested more than $150 million in quantum computing, a technology most Americans have never used, but one that could reshape artificial intelligence, drug discovery, encryption, national security, and surveillance. Quantum computers use qubits instead of ordinary binary bits. Unlike traditional bits, which are either a one or a zero, qubits can represent multiple possibilities at once. That gives quantum systems the potential to solve certain complex calculations beyond the reach of today’s computers. President Trump signed two executive orders this year to accelerate quantum development and prepare U.S. systems for quantum-era cyber threats. IBM is also working toward a machine with at least 1,000 programmable qubits, a major step toward more powerful quantum systems. The potential is enormous. Paired with AI, quantum computing could help researchers model disease, study pollution, test new materials, and examine massive problems faster than ever. But the risks are enormous too. The same technology could expand surveillance, undermine encryption, and give those who control it unprecedented power to predict and influence human behavior. The question is not just what quantum-powered AI can do. It is who controls it, and whether the public will have any protection from it. Austin Steinbart (Austin Steinbart) joins me to break down quantum computing, AI, surveillance, and what this technology could mean for society.

BITCOIN RAILS #61: QUANTUM CRYPTOGRAPHY FOR BITCOIN | with Dan Boneh Dan Boneh 🔗 YOUTUBE: 🌿 SPOTIFY: One of the most prolific and influential cryptographers in the world, it’s difficult to fully quantify the impact that Dan Boneh has had on Bitcoin and digital assets more broadly. Through both his own research and his mentorship of some of the space’s most important contributors — e.g. Andrew Poelstra, Benedikt Bünz ☕️, and Robin Linus — few people have done more to shape the cryptographic foundations underlying modern blockchains and digital finance. More recently, Dan co-authored Google's widely discussed paper, “Securing Elliptic Curve Cryptocurrencies against Quantum Vulnerabilities,” which reduced prior estimates of the resources required to run Shor’s algorithm against the elliptic-curve cryptography used by Bitcoin. The paper reignited debate around quantum computing timelines and the long-term security assumptions behind modern cryptocurrencies. In this episode of Bitcoin Rails, Dan and I discuss the current state of quantum computing, its potential implications for Bitcoin, and how he believes the Bitcoin community should think about preparing for a post-quantum future over the coming decade and beyond. And yes, Dan shares his take on the “when quantum” question in the interview, among other key perspectives.
