From Hurricane #Imelda today. Strong winds create a streaking effect on the ocean surface. Was about 65 kts here so this is hurricane force. Eventually upgraded to Cat 2 during the mission. Should pack a decent punch to Bermuda tonight.

Despite an asymmetric structure, the NHC has upgraded Hurricane Karina to a 145 MPH Category 4 this morning, over 1,000 miles west of the southern tip of Baja California. She is the 3rd CAT 4+ Hurricane of the East Pacific Hurricane Season, and she certainly won’t be the last.

With winds still raging at 160 MPH, Hurricane Polo has now been at CATEGORY 5 intensity for a combined ~30 HOURS total. That is the 2ND longest duration of sustained CAT 5 winds ever recorded for a single Pacific Hurricane. This continues to be a historic storm.

Called Tehuano Winds - wind is funneled through the Isthmus of Tehuantepec mountain gap in S Mexico - becoming a wind firehose into the Pacific, with gusts 💨 reaching near hurricane force. These winds bring rough seas, upwell nutrients, and sometimes, when they happen early enough in autumn, can help spawn the spin needed to aid hurricane formation. Science!!

Hurricane Polo is only a few hours away from possibly becoming the FIRST known Major Hurricane to make landfall on the western coast of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula. Usually, the ocean temps this far north are too lukewarm to sustain CAT 3+ intensity (which is why the three existing Major Hurricane landfalls in Baja have all come from the south and/or the Sea of Cortez). But this year, with the El Niño supercharged warmth of the Pacific, Polo has an unfortunate chance to enter the record books again. The Hurricane Hunters are investigating the storm now to discover its true strength.
