Based on the messages I've been getting, it seems like most people building science apps struggle more with the design than the functionality. So for the next parts of this series, I'm going to take simple datasets, like the pollinator list here, and explore the unique designs AI can come up with. I'll save the more complex AI tasks for my other posts, like the Vibe Coding Robotics series. Also, like I've mentioned in previous posts, these are just simple apps I make for fun. No fact checking or anything. I just start with a science concept I have a basic idea about, ask AI to add random things, and see where it goes while listening to music or watching a movie. If the result ends up looking nice, I share it 😉

If you're a teacher and want to make an app like this for your students, here are a few tips that might help. Also, if you're not a developer, I think Gemini is probably the easiest model to use. That's one of the reasons I post most of my science demos with Gemini, so people without a programming background can follow along and try to recreate them if they want

Man, this is awesome. People are going to be using all these great AI-build (or AI-was-heavily-involved) apps, products and services that they'll LOVE, and they'll still be hating on AI.

Very nice! How did you make those 3D models? Or are they sourced from some website?

Dilum Sanjaya's profile picture

generated. I usually use Hunyuan3D and Tripo

@RoboAlchemist The mesh looks very clean, i've tried those but they had a lot of artefacts. Maybe they've done an upgrade.

@RoboAlchemist they have improved but also not every generation looks great, there are a lot of other models I generated that looks awful 😂 just using the ones that looks good

Impossible to get such a 3D with current sota models

I can definitely see school districts in America buying something like this, especially considering most of the kids have a laptop provided by the school anyway.

amazing! were these a one shot, or edited in anyway? the reflections and such are amazing too

Dilum Sanjaya3 months ago

Not one shotted. For this one, I actually generated the 3D models first and then added the UI part by part. No edits, just the raw screen recording. You can get good reflections using a Three.js environment. Check out this video by @dangreenheck if you'd like to learn more about reflections

Did you start with an image for the design?

Dilum Sanjaya's profile picture
Dilum Sanjaya3 months ago

For this one, I didn't generate the UI desing. I generated a couple of insect models first using AI generated images, but the UI is mostly just me trying different things

@DilumSanjaya I'm amazed that those are AI generated models. What img->3d model did you use?

That's great! Could you share more details on how you built it? What was the initial prompt you gave to Gemini 3.1 Pro? Did you use Three.js or another library for the rotatable models? Any chance you'll open-source this one on GitHub or CodePen? Thanks!

pollinator explorer built with gemini 3.1 pro. the wild part isn't the app, it's that "part 8" means someone's shipping science toys faster than most teams ship jira tickets.
